Looking for strut/shocks advice

Hi all, I need new shocks and struts for my 03 Limited. My mechanic said I couldn't find aftermarket struts and would need to go directly to the dealer. Any advice? Seems hard to believe. Also wondering if used struts are worth it at all? Just trying to find a reasonable deal. Thanks all!

I have an '03 Ltd. and 3 years ago removed the xreas system and installed new Bilstein 4600's and new '07 FJ springs all around. It's pretty easy rally, just takes a little while, 5-8 hrs. using the "no spring compressor method".
May as well replace the strut mounts while you're in there.
Be about $800 in parts if you do it.

You don’t need to go to the dealer. There are several companies that make 4Runner suspensions. If you’re maintaining stock height, you could buy Bilstein 4600 shocks, or another brand from most auto parts stores. You can also buy stock height springs, and assemble the fronts with the OEM parts you took off. The rear is much easier, separate shocks and springs.
