Sanity Check

Judging by the sidewall of my new tires, it has 7 ply sidewall???

That makes it a C-rated, right?

There's a difference between actual plies, and Ply-ratings.

You have 2 Polyester plies in the sidewalls.

In the tread area you have 2 Polyester plies, 2 Steel plies, and 1 Nylon ply.

A C load range is in an LT (Light Truck) tire. You have a P (passenger) rated tire, which would be given a 4-ply rating.

A C load rating has a 6-ply rating.

A D load rating has an 8-ply rating

A E load rating has a 10-ply rating.

A F load rating has a 12-ply rating.

Etc, etc.

Thanks for the clarification! Not the toughest tire but it's what I need at the moment. I'm coming from e-rated Nitto Ridge Grapplers and these are so much quieter and smoother. I'll just have to be careful off roading with them for sure 👍

The 4Runner comes with P-rated tires stock. Yeah, they aren't the most durable option, but then they don't have the weight, comfort, and MPG penalty from having heavier duty, more aggressive tires.

Tires are all about compromise. You just have to decide what your priorities are.

I'm running the same tire as you, in a 10-ply rated, E load range tire. They weigh more, ride firmer, and no doubt there's an MPG penalty. But I wanted the durability of the 10-ply rated tire when on trails. The 4Runner isn't a regular driver for me, so the trade-off was acceptable.

Mine.
