Question Keypad Entry

I have a 2004 4 Runner SR5. As a former Explorer owner, the only thing I miss baout that vehicle is the keypad entry. I know this is available after market; has anyone installed this on their 03/04 4Runner. Are you satisfied?
Thanks

why have keypad entry when you have keyless entry remote or alram? isn't it easier to press one button?

only time keypad entry is worth it, is when you lock your keys in the vehicle.

otherwise, its a waste of money since they come with a remote as standard equipment anyway.

Waste of Money?

I don't think so - there are other advantages: allows you to intentionally leave your keys in the vehicle [out of sight], if you don't want them in your pocket, for jogging or something. Also allows others - wife, etc., access to the vehicle while separated, antique shows, etc., a true convenience item if you want to get in your car @ home, & your keys are in the house. There probably aren't many of us who haven't ever accidentally locked ourselves out of a car. :cursin: It is a nice feeling to know you have a car which you cannot lock yourself out of!

And Tweak, I have seen them in the aftermarket. Some of them look pretty good, the only prob I would have is where to put it.
I think the only acceptable place [for me] would be, like some Exploder's, on the B-pillar, vertically, but I'm not sure that's doable on 4Rnr. Not sure I could take the Dremmel to my truck anyway! Let us know if you pursue.

Instead of a keypad

Found this in a post, looks interesting and solves the problem without body damage.

Keypad Entry

Once you get accustomed to the keypad, it's used a lot. Fishing in remote areas with friends allows any of them access to their gear without a key. When my hands are full of merchandise from a store, it's often easier to key the entry code than get the remote out of my pocket.
I've alomst got myself convinced to let this accessory company install it. It's just getting by the fact they will be drilling holes in the side of the 4 RUnner.
Thanks for your input.

granted it has it uses. but i just use a carbiner(sp?) to click my keys to my belt loop. been using one since around mid 80's. i feel kinda naked without it attached, which saves me the trouble of leaving my keys somewhere.

just make sure the people putting in the keypad have experience. hate to see them cut into the door and go oops. kinda hard to fix a mistake in a metal door.

or you could get a lexus. have you seen the new commercials about the lexus key entry? i want one of those. you can leave your keys in the ignition and walk up to the car, touch the door handle and it unlocks.

its called smart access and a demo is located here

Keyless entry alternative

Guys
Checkout http://www.12voltshop.com. They have two answers to your inquiry. One lets you tap on the windshield and the other you carry a card that the auto senses and does whatever is programed, ie open door.

keypad entry is the only option on the 4R i would gladly pay for. If you run, bike, etc it always nice to leave the keys inside. As well, if kids or others need to go back to the car without you, they can, even when you're not around. "ok kids, meet back at the car around 4pm" and if you're late or early, no big deal for anyone.

I agree

I've never had a vehicle that had the keypad option, but it's obviously a worthwhile feature. I mountain-bike and I must carry my keys in my CamelBak. I am forever paranoid about losing them when going into the CamelBak for CO2 and a tube to repair flats. I have forgotten to zip the pack closed on occasion, and only luck prevents the keys from getting lost.
Even skiing, and as mentioned jogging, not having the key would be great.
And since the new 4runners have the aoutmatic lights, your battery should never die and leave you without the ability to enter with the keypad. ( Are they battery backed up at all?)

My one concern would be WIND NOISE. What effect will this pad sticking out have on the noise? I like the way the truck drives now.

Keypad

Seems as tho the majority agrees WITH the pad. And while buying a Lexus is always a way to get it, I'm thinking you can probably have one installed [even without body damage] for a liiiiiittle inside of the extra $20K!! Damage is not an issue: choose a reputable shop [read insured] & if they screw up, it's a new door skin. No compromises there.

My wife's '00 Continental has it; I speak from experience, it's superuseful.

And Moneypit: Thanks for the tip on "Tap Lock" I did a little additional research, found the actual manufacturer [Ohio], and will be calling them Monday. While I love a keypad, installation & location remain issues for me, so this Tap Lock option is most interesting. I do picture myself looking over my shoulder though, making sure nobody sees me 'tapping out the Aggie War Hymm" to get into my car! My guys would have just waaaaaay too much fun with that one! Their #1 joy in life is to pull me out of the mud on the jobsite anyway!

There's several companies that make keyless entry keypads for vehicles that are similar to the one that Ford uses:

Check out:

Tap Lock

Don't know all the details yet, but I will soon; I have one on the way. I'll keep you all posted. I'm thinking of it more as a anti-lockout device, rather than a convenience item. But I've been wrong before [plenty] - I thought I would never use the arrows on the Vanentine 1.
