Winch still working with ground cable detached from battery

So I just installed my new westin low pro bumper, along with winch. I installed a cut off switch at my negative terminal it was all working before tightening everything down. Now that everything's tightened down I noticed the winch is still working when the switch is off, so I removed the ground cable completely and it's still working! Is it possible it's grounding through the bumper? The negative lug on winch was downward facing... does anyone know if this an issue and could it cause potential issues?

you might want to use the cutoff switch on the positive lead, chances are your winch is body ground with the housing.

Yeah, agree. Put cutoff on positive side. Too weird.

I went ahead and put it on the positive side, which is ok with me I made it fit, I was just afraid when running the winch it could harm some electronics.
