Did a toyota dealer give you the price or did a shop give you the price?
BTW, that shop can get in a hell of a lot of trouble for telling you up front that you'll be able to search things while driving. They can tell you that it can be done and how to do it, but them telling you it'll come like that isn't very smart.
None the less, Eclipse, Kenwood, and Pioneer are good navs. Personally I have had a Pioneer N1 and now a Kenwood 8019 with the nav add on and I love it. Kenwood is the easiest to bypass and you can get an all in 1 nav for around $1500 + install.
As far as Ipod integration goes, Pioneer and Alpine have the most user friendly interfaces. Alpines is full speed and 100% flawless. Pioneers works basically the same as Alpine just a little slower. On touch screens Pioneers, the Ipod wheel comes up and you search and what not from it just like you were using your ipod.
