Side exhaust mod (for back window lovers)

I was at the gas station yesterday, and found an older generation 4runner. I'm not sure if it was stock or not, but he had his exhaust tip running off to the side instead of straight back (as in the 04's). He said he can have the back window down, and have no exhuast smell slip in. Can someone verify this for me? I love that back window, and I want to be able to keep it down while driving and not die at the same time. Has anyone done this for this purpose??? Or even for any other purpose???

i think the 3rd gen runners had exhaust out the passenger side. at least on my 98 runner it was out the side and i could leave the window fully down and get no exhaust smell.

Mine (2nd gen) with the rear window down by itself will because there is a backdraft pulling air in but if I put my drivers side window down even crack it it will pull the air out the back and it's fine.

NoDak is this the same with you or could you just put your rear down and not have the exhaust pull in the back?.

I had mine turned out to the side mainly because I hated the way thestock pipe was sticking straight out. I also hated that resontator bulge at the end of it. I didn't change out the muffler, I just had them cut it off behind the resonator, turn out the new pipe and put the tip on. I haven't really had a chance to ride around with the window down, but I shouldn't get any of the smell inside.

my 3rd gen exhaust was a single pipe in the same location as momo's setup, about even with the bottom of his mudflap and sticking out a bit further also. also it was pointing downward toward the ground at a steeper angle, say about 15-20 degrees angle. probably easier for someone to post a pic of the 3rd exhaust than trying to explain this.

i did notice fumes when at low speeds, say around 20-25mph or lower. but at 30+ mph i couldnt tell any fume smell in the cabin.

Momo,

I have to apologize for my ignorance, but what is the actual purpose of the resonator??? I took a quick glance and thought that piece was just a small muffler. Did you change out your exhaust, or just the tips?
Thanks again!

The resonator just helps keep the sound of the exhaust down. I was worried that when they cut it off that is was going to effect the sound, but it hardly made any difference. Just because I drive it every day I could tell, but it wasn't hardly enough to even mention. I left the stock muffler on, because I didn't want it to be any louder. It was just for the looks.

Thanks for the info.

Next time you are out and about, will you give the exhaust/back window a try and let me know your results?

For cutting the pipe, then fitting the piece to turn it out and the tip, it was about $65....To me it was well worth it.

I didn't ever leave the house yesterday so I never really got a chance to try it out. I am about to leave here in just a second to run some errands, so I will let you know when I get back.
