US Bug Shield vs. Canadian Bug Shield

Hi everyone. Just got my rig a few weeks ago and found this site shortly after...what a great resource!

anyhow, i was wondering if there was really any difference between the bug shields sold in the US versus the Canadian one. does one work better than the other? or is the biggest difference the look.

thanks for all the help!

only diff. is that the CAN shield covers the front painted V sections between the grille and headlights whereas the US version doesnt.

I also think the CAN version has a cleaner profile than the US version. I had one of the US versions on mine for about a month, then took it off and it has been sitting in my garage since. I have thought about springing for the CAN version.

Steve:

You are so close to the Canadian border, you can come up for the day, pickup the deflector and be home that night. A dealer in Abbotford advised me they used to get some parts in Washington, as the same part was unavailable in Canada (an example was the nose mask for the 03-04 4Runners).

My bug deflector is well designed, low profile and no wind effect.

Here come some pictures: As noted before, the US version does not cover the "V" portion of the area next the the grill. Also note, that the somewhat "unclear" picture is of a rock hitting the hood and then the windshield (paint damage and windshield damage). The next day, I got another rock in the windshield. I've had the 4R for about 3.5 months w/ no rocks, then installed the deflector, and have had 2 rocks hit me within 2 weeks. Could be a coincidence (I'm hoping), but just be on the lookout. Has anyone else had this problem??? I thought the purpose of this thing was to "deflect" wind/objects away from the windshield???????

They are for deflecting bugs and other light objects by changing the airflow over the hood. A rock is to heavy to change it's path just by air flow.

I actually got mine at Brookstone, but that is the same thing. The deal with these are that they get better with use. They are great for light dust, pollen and such, but don't expect it to do very well if you have been riding down dirt roads and have dust caked on it.

Thanks for the detail pictures swoopeno. That is why I don't like the US deflector. There is a big gap under it at the "V" between the grille and lights.

Aerodynamics tells you that is basically creating a air duct as the deflector is acting like a wing.

When air is moving underneath the deflector (between the deflector and hood) through the hole, it is moving faster because the small gap is creating higher pressure.

That is basically acting as a suction for debris to be shot through those spots instead of deflecting OVER the hood.

I have not seen any aero tests but I would be much more comfortable with that Canadian version. Is there any way to get it here in the US??

If pic doesn't work look here:

Red dotted: air duct created by deflector
yellow: high pressure air flow
