Advice needed: OEM HU, Ipod, aftermarket Amp/Sub in '96 4runner?

I need to correct a non-functioning Cassette/CD player (CD portion is bad) combo in my '96 4runner, and would like to upgrade to something that still appears OEM, but would allow me to interface with my Ipod or Iphone and use an aftermarket amp & sub in the future.

My understanding is that after model year '97 the size of the OEM units changed?

I'm reading a bit on Scion HUs here, but all on later model installation...

Anyone have the radio for dummies version for me?

Thanks in advance!
