I know exactly what you mean about the iphone. I didn't think it was possible to play pandora out of the dock connector but it is.
My Pioneer head unit has a USB ipod/iphone connection and seems to have 2 ipod modes. Head unit control and ipod control. The default is head unit control where it shows the artist and track on the head unit. But if you switch to ipod control, the ipod is in control and you can play pandora out of the dock connector which will also charge your phone so you battery doesn't die from all the 3g use. Also, in this mode, song info doesn't show up on the head unit but you can still use the head unit to skip to the next song, etc.
I'm sure this would work on any pioneer unit with a usb ipod interface. I don't know about other brands. I did also run an AUX cable to my glove box b/c i wasn't sure if the ipod stuff would work with iphones.
