One is reserved for future off-road lights on a roofrack.

You would need to incorporate a relay as the '08 button is a momentary type switch. This guy had a switch for sale, maybe he still has the part #, I know he sold the switch. http://www.toyota-4runner.org/showth...threadid=41229

Just curious, but how do you know for sure that the center diff isn't locked when you turn off the VSC? Have you been able to verify this somehow?

Yes. 1st let me say I have been playing with diffs etc since I was a little kid and have a good 'feel' for this stuff.
More directly to your question: I did two, low speed 360's in a dirt lot, one officially locked and one with my switch on. You can visually see and feel the difference. The 'locked' leaves very prominent marks in the dirt. The 360 completed with my switch 'on' produces tracks that look the same as if you did it in 2wd (and you can feel the absence of wheelslip/binding).

For all those who do not want the computure to interfere with their throttle input during off-roading (i.e. those that seek deliberate wheel spin)...isn't disabling traction control (ATRAC) more important than VSC? VSC just prevents the vehicle from spinning laterally, while disabling Traction Control will enable the driver to manipulate the throttle/wheel spin. Thoughts?

[COLOR=blue]No with a little bit of yes... Terminology: The ATRAC and VSC combine and work in harmony to produce traction control (and skid control). Traction control is a little bit the VSC cutting the power output and a little bit ATRAC. The VSC is what cuts the power output to help minimalize or eliminate wheelspin.
The ATRACs primary job is to pinch the brake on the wheel that's spinning faster which sends the power to the wheel with traction. It works R to L only and provides the limited-slip functionality. There's no scenario where it would be pinching both brakes simultaneously. When running with just the ATRAC the driver has very good power modulation and as much or as little power as the driver chooses. If you hit the throttle hard enough and the engine gets in excess of 2500rpm or so, ATRAC stops doing it's thing. What's unclear is whether it stops working or the horsepower over powers it; either way it doesn

2wd ATRAC on / VSC off DONE!
I finally got the Holy Grail of this mod...
As you may know this mod allows for VSC off, center diff unlocked operations while in 4wd. What was missing is the ability to run 2wd VSC off. I got it
To use 2wd VSC off is strictly a procedural variation of the existing mod.
The following in conjunction with the mod gets you 2wd w/ATRAC and no VSC:
- Select 4hi and allow it to engage.
- Select VSC off via the installed switch
- Select 2wd. Feel for the telltale 'normal' light thump as it reverts to 2wd. You are now in 2wd w/no VSC and fully functional ATRAC.
NOTE:- Both 4wd indicator lights will flash, the VSC off light will be steady. I drove like this and did the cycle many times with no ill effects. I did two, full 360+ donuts too
I will also add there's no audible evidence that in it's "state of confusion" it attemping to do any mode changes. If you listen carefully you can hear relays clicking under the glovebox when the 4WD is attempting to change modes. When driving in 2wd or 4wd with the added VSC off switch in use I hear no clicking.
- Before shutdown or reselecting 4wd shut the VSC off switch to off (ungrounded position).

I have a dumb question. could this work with a 2wd 4th gen? I love to power slide and drift my truck but some times the safety crap kicks in and steals power. I would love to turn it off completely. I would even go as far as turning the ABS off.

You have a button on the left side of the steering wheel that'll help. To get rid of it totally pull the two wire push on connector that's on the master cylinder. If you like those results put a switch in
The 'downside' is you'll just have the one-wheel-peel (no limited slip).

absolute NOOB question coming here...
VSC = Vehicle Safety Control
ATRAC = ?????
I am completely missing the point on this mod. What is the point of disabling VSC and being able to keep ATRAC going with 4WD Hi/Lo and 2WD?
What is the advantage? Sorry, I don't know what all this stuff mean :*(

ATRAC meaning: How does ATRAC work??
VSC uses the brakes to control the truck under various conditions, sliding, spinning wheels, etc. The biggest issue most folks had was that it cuts engine power substantially under certain conditions, it also prevents power slides on fast dirt roads. This mod will bypass the VSC to allow you all the wheelspin you need without going through the long cycle of locking/unlocking the center diff. It also allows you to keep the diff open for fast dirt driving without the VSC spoiling the fun (although it can be dangerous, so use at your own peril).

VSC is vehicle stability control. A-TRAC is active traction control.
The mod is to allow for power slides, donuts, etc. VSC is pretty much an electronic nanny that kills safe fun when you're in snow, sand, mud, etc. 2008+ 4Runners have the VSC off button from the factory.
