I bought a great low-mileage Urban Runner a year ago and I am ready to do a stereo upgrade. I know this is slightly off-topic, but i did not want to start a new Urban Runner stereo thread.

I know I want to get a new head unit and amp. I know I do not want to add a subwoofer. I am not an audiophile nor do I need to need to crank it way up.

My question: do I need to replace the speakers, or will a new H/U and 4-channel amp provide a significant improvement over stock? Are those stock speakers going to sound pretty good with more power going to them?

If the Urban Runner speakers are the same as any non-JBL 4th gen, I suppose I should post this question somewhere else in the forum where it will get more views and not hijack this thread.

Thanks for any input!

the new HU will more than power the factory speakers. the sound quality will be just about the same to the naked ear as is with the stock deck. I don't think you will notice much improvement. you will have more control over the sound with most aftermarket HU giving some advantage.
you only need to get an amp if you are upgrading the stock speakers, otherwise might be kind of a waste to amplify them. I honestly wouldn't bother.

I recently upgraded my deck with the ddx970, fits perfectly in the dash with the trim ring. I added a back-up camera while they were installing it. I highly recommend it if you have any kind of city parking.

As for the speakers, I have not seen worse stock speakers before. When I removed them they were paper thin and I believe that even basic aftermarket speakers with a new head unit would be a huge difference. If you like to ride with the windows down after market speakers are the way to go.

Id recommend someone install it for you. The wiring harness for the urban is a nightmare

Hoping for some help here...

I just installed a Sony head unit in my 2008 urban runner. Everything is working fine (power, lighting, steering wheel controls, etc.) except now I have a check engine light on and my VSC and Traction lights are on as well. I scanned the code and it came back P0500, which is for a vehicle speed sensor. I've checked both VSS sensors on the tranny and all four ABS sensors, and everything was fine. Is it possible that replacing the head unit could cause these lights to come on?

Did you install yourself? Did you use any other add-on's? Maestro, PAC unit? I was soldering together the wire harness for my Kenwood last night and there was a "vehicle speed" wire, or something. If something like this is present in your install, maybe this is causing the issue? Worth looking into.

It also assumes you use a Metra Axxess ASWC-1 for connecting your steering wheel controls. There are a lot of wires I didn't use. If you install a backup camera or aftermarket amp, you may end up using more wires. Let me know if folks have questions.

Thank you! thank you! thank you! Saved me a ton of frustration and time trying to figure out the wiring. This is an excellent PDF for anyone with the TomTom headunit.

Hi everyone, I joined the forum just to ask this question as it seems I have finally find the one repository of information on these things! Hope that's OK

I'm trying to do the opposite of everyone in here... and install one of these (in a Toyota that didn't have one). My wife loves keeping her 2000 Solara OEM-appearing. She's wanted a radio with BT and USB for a while but didn't want anything aftermarket or anything that looked too new.

Since the car has the factory JBL sound system with amplifier I cannot use the speaker outs on the head unit directly.

Instead of going with a Metra 70-8113 and a 4-channel high-level to RCA adapter box... is there a certain harness that would just plug into this radio and to the car?

I did read this: "It is not a standard Toyota harness inside the Urban Runner. There is a jumper harness from the main vehicle harness to the Eclipse deck that comes with the Urban Runner."

So... where can I find that harness? Anyone have a part number?

Thanks for any help you can give!

Here is some insight into what I encountered with an 09 urban runner. I had the PAC SWI-RC-1 for the steering wheel control. Now you only need these for the controller called dip switches. They are 1,3,4,6,8 up 2,5 and 7 down. This programs the controller. This goes for the pioneer and alpine radios. SWI-RC-1 Wiring Guide – PAC this will help with finding which switches you need for your specific radio using the 4runner as the vehicle. The wiring is white to red/black, white/black to blue/yellow, and black(ground) to brown/black on the 4 pin connector. Attached is the pictures I have from this.

Has anyone tried replacing the TomTom Unit with an aftermarket backup camera as well?

HI guys, I am replacing my old aftermarket head Unit with a new Kenwood DNX997xr and wanted the MAESTRO RR so i can get tire pressure and gauges, I also purchased the to1 harness, long story short my truck original HU was the TOM TOM one, I took the new HU to a place to have it installed after 3 hours the guys says he cant install the MAESTRO or the to1 in my truck cause it is not compatible, I told him I knew other people have installed it and it works, anyway they charged me $350 for the install but didnt install the MAESTRO or to1 is there anyone that can help me out in the NJ shore area? I really wanted this installed but now i am broke wasnt expecting such a high price for half of what I wanted installed. I am not good with wire tracing and stuff like that to do it myself...

Or if anyone has a detailed wiring for the MAESTRO and TO1 please post it, then maybe I can bring it back with the info and see if I can get it installed or attempt myself.

I actually found the wire harness layout for the urban runner with tom tom HU. You can see how different it is from normal 4runners. Can someone help me install the maestro RR and T01 wire harness adapter? I am not good with wire diagrams

do the tom tom unit a premium jbl system? for the maestro, you just need the odb 2 signal right? and then the the steering wheel inputs right?
try this guide to use the steering wheel adapter wires.

It had the TOM TOM unit NO JBL. The shop installed a axxess steering wheel control so they work. I really want the obd2 signal for tire pressure, gauges and codes everything else is currently working. they didnt use the TO1 harness. I dont understand that wiring diagram you posted... If you look at the diagram from the tom tom nothing matches up, they spliced the kenwood wiring to the trucks wiring.

i know plugs dont match up, you need to hardwire these in, follow the idatalink as a guide, the metra uses the same signal wires, so you can tap in those. now for the odb2 plug, you should be able to just plug that in,
idatalink maestro needs to be flashed with the correct firmware.

on the maestro, find out what color is the
swi1
swi2
feed
accessory
ground
the accessory and ground can be tied into the radio harness.

thats the problem i cant figure out what all the wires are, the ones that connect to the stereo are easy they are marked but the ones that go into the maestro are not. I was thinking of getting the standard replacement connectors for the sr5 and wire the 10 and 6 pin in for the speakers and power so I dont have to completely mutilate the TO1 harness, Where I am confused is the steering wheel controls and the aftermarket rear camera, the truck never came with a backup camera but the TO1 harness has a connector for it, do I have to wire that in to? or can I just leave it the way it was installed? I also Have a aftermarket amp but I think I am able to just leave that the way it is. I did flash the maestro and configured the steering wheel. but I have no idea how to wire it direct to truck wires since I dont know which wires are which. and when I find them do I just match them up sw1 to sw1 sw2 to sw2?

use the regular sw as a guide, see if you can see the wire color are the same for that harness. now on the camera harness, you might just need to use the other guide and find the signal for the rca + and -. there is no need for that harness your trying to plug and play, its needs to be directly hardwire.

see if you can use the purple/red , pink/red , black white, red is accessory wire and black is ground. this is for the steering wheel part.
