Question '00 4runner 6.5" drop-in speaker choices

I have a 2000 4runner with stock 6.5" component speakers that I am looking to upgrade. I am looking for some drop in replacement speakers that will require little if any modification to fit in correctly.

I care enough about audio quality to upgrade, but not enough to spend several hours fitting speakers in my door.

I read an imformative thread over at yotatech:
http://www.yotatech.com/f2/4runner-a...ed-ideas-3968/

Boston Acoustics Pro 6.5's are suggested, but I read elsewhere they too require modification.

Anyone have experience with simple 3rd gen 4runner speaker upgrades?

Was it seemless?
You have a 04' (4th Gen)
Not sure this will work as well on a 3rd gen.

Are you talking about front and back? They are different sizes.

Are you going to amp them?

The PG RSD's are really good for the money and they are like $100.

Focals are really nice.

Infinity Kappas should sound alright.

JL and Alpine make good stuff also.

Can any of these just be DROPPED IN? Any speaker is a great step up from stock speakers so quality is not my primary focus. EASE OF INSTALLATION is.

I just intalled JBL GTO627 in the front doors of my '98 with no mods needed. I think the '98 door is identical to the '00 door.

I attached the adapter bracket that came with the speakers to the plastic assembly on the door. I then attached the speaker to the metal bracket and put the door back together. The only tricky part was making sure that the speaker connection didn't interfere with the plastic assembly on the door. I used self-sticking foam tape to line both the bracket and the speaker mounts to make sure I didn't get any vibrations.

It sounded better than stock when I first insetalled it and now after a week or so of breaking in, it sounds great. I left the stock tweeters intact.

Thanks for the info, I am really looking for a component speaker however, not a two-way like the GTO0627

I was initially thinking about getting the JBL GTO607C. However, I really needed to upgrade the OEM rear speakers. They sounded bad even when they were BRAND NEW. Now that they are 11 years old, they sound like they are playing under water with a blanket on top of them.

For the price of the GTO607C, I upgraded BOTH my front and my rear speakers. The 607C has the same Intermount III system as the 627 which means the woofer will bolt right in. You'll probably need to do a little modification to fit the tweeters in though.

What did you end up doing for the rears?

I have the GTO627's in the front but I still need to upgrade the rears.

Focal are great if you have 1000.00 to spend on just front speakers. Thats not including powering them up/ Take a look into the new POLK MM series components, They are a great fit for 4runners, and they sound great for about 150.00 They also are approx 2.7 ohs so you get all the power out if what ever source your using. " you can spend less on an amp" is what im saying. I have had POLK DB in my truck years ago. They were good speakers, and the MM seriers are better.. I do like Jl audio as you may see, but there definatly not the best-- Look at Diamond Audio// for great speakers at a decent price-- I will tell you this if you are looking to spend serious cash on speakers and you want thr best!! DYNAUDIO.. Period the end. Granted Focal utopia is great also but there is just nothing out there that can
touch Dynaudio. QUICK LIST OF MY FAVS!!!

ALL HIGH DOLLAR$$$$

DYNAUDIO MW 162-152
HYBRID AUDIO -CLARIUS
DIAMOND AUDIO D6
IMAGE DYNAMICS
JL AUDIO - ZR
POLK AUDIO -SR SERIES
FOCAL UTOPIA
Rainbow- " i have not heard these" just word of mouth..
ARC AUDIO amps. not blown away by speakers, but i have not listened to there complete line yet..

any questions hit me up. IM AN AUDIO JUNKIE,,,,,

hands down, alpine type-s 6.5 components.

installed in my '98 in about 20 min each side(mostly taking the door panel off). They sound great and i don't have them amped. I think the biggest modification i had to do was take the cover off the alpine tweeters and stick them behind the 4runner tweeter covers so they got 'stuck' in a good position. Very easy stuff.

best part, they won't break the bank, i think $119 for a set(2 speakers and 2 tweeters).

If you haven't decided yet, I'll be installing some Boston Acoustics SX60's in the front in a few days- I can let you know how easy (i hope) it was and how they sound unamped, but aftermarket H/U. (I posted this because I'll need a reminder to post back on teh outcome if anyone is interested)
