3rd Gen Speaker/Tweeter Question

I am going to swap out the speakers in my 2001 SR5. Probably just get something that is kind of inexpensive as replacements.

My question is mainly about the tweeter. Can I use the OEM tweeter with the upgraded speakers or will I need to upgrade the tweeters too and then put a crossover on them? I won't be using a separate amp....just the factory radio at the moment, but might get a different head unit in a few months..but I haven't decided yet.

I am audio DUMB, so any SIMPLE info would be great!! :behead:

if you are not swapping out the head unit the you can continue to run the factory tweeter. What speakers are you thinking of running, what defines inexpensive to you?

Well, I am swapping out my head unit. I might just leave the factory speakers in after all...just depends on how it sounds after I swap head units.

So you are saying that the tweeters won't work with an aftermarket head unit? My friend that had a 2001 Limited said his factory tweeters/speakers worked fine with his aftermarket head unit.

I just wasn't sure if replacing the just the lower door speakers would affect the tweeters, especially if the 6.5s that I was going to put in already had a tweeter.

You will notice a significant improvement just by upgrading the head-unit. I think the factory tweeters have a crossover that is built into the factory amp. I am not certain on this but I do know that there are two separate circuits for the tweeters and the door speakers. One thing to note is when you connect the wiring harness/adapter you will have to connect it to the plug on the backside of the factory amp, not the one that goes to the factory radio.

**UPDATE**

I took a look at my old factory tweeters and they do have a crossover on them so yes, you can leave the factory tweeters in while updating the headunit, or the door speakers.

Great, thanks! Just to make sure I called a guy I used to work with and he said I wouldn't even use the factory amp...just bypass it and run the harness off of the headunit and that will power everything.

Now just to find a wiring diagram, etc....I guess that might come with the harness when it comes in.

Also, do you think that if the door speakers have a tweeter (4 way speakers), will that effect the factory tweeter up by the window?

The Wiring harness is what you will need in order to bypass the factory amp. Unless you want to cut off all the factory plugs which I feel is not the smartest thing to do. The Harness/Amp bypass will come with a wiring diagram, as will the new head unit. Also the extra tweeters in your new speakers won't cause any problems with the factory tweeters, you may notice that the highs are overpowering the mids and lows but it shouldn't be a problem.

Glad to help. You should at least take pictures of the finished install. What radio did you end up getting?

I will get some pics up tonight. I ended up buying the Sony WX-GT77UI double din. Has USB hookup and controls/charges your iPod or iPhone. Pretty cool unit. And you are right, it made my stock speakers sound 10x better. Not sure if I will replace them now or not, but who knows!

Friend, replace your speakers! LOL. I changed out my HU and it really woke up the stock speakers and made me think twice about replacing the speakers. Then after a while, you begin to notice that the speakers really do stink. I finally changed out the speakers yesterday and it also made a world of difference. There is much better seperation of tones and everything sounds crisp again. I have a 2006 Sport that had the WORST factory sound system I ever saw...or should I say heard. Now I am happy again.

You are probably right...maybe I should start looking for some decent speakers.
