Does anyone still use CB's for off-roading?

I'm looking to possibly get a CB. Growing up, my dad always had one in the Jeep for when we'd go off-roading and I'm wondering if I should invest in one for the Runner? I don't get any cell coverage anywhere I go, but of course 911 is supposed to work anywhere/anytime. Have yet to test that theory out thank goodness.

Depends on the frequency that the person off-roads. A beginner may not have anything. If they go a few times, they may have an FRS. As you move up the ladder you will find that a CB is a bare MINIMUM if you want to have any clue what the group is doing. Then finally you have HAM. Most people don;t use HAM radios since they require a license to use, so you'll want a CB as well when you are with larger groups.

Blair (BlairB) is currently working on getting his HAM license. I may follow suit shortly after once I finish my current to-do list.

I agree with HB. My Wheeling buddy just moved out of state so I started looking into 4X Clubs and 90% of the ones I looked at either listed a CB as a recommended piece of equipment and some said Mandatory piece of safety right next to First Aid and Fire Extinguisher. I will be getting one soon for my truck. Since i used to just wheel with Brother and another friend we used the FRS talk about style.

we use our CBs every weekend, you cant beat them for communicating on the trail, they are very inexpensive, easy to install, easy to use, no license needed, and IMHO are a very good safety item.

Awesome! Thanks for the responses.

Now what kind to get? I was looking at the Cobra 75, because I noticed it on someone's list of upgrades on here. Can't remember who (blacked out runner?). It looked like a sweet little setup without the big box mounted anywhere. And it costs the same as the other Cobra models. Any advantage to having the 'box' unit kind?

Can you all throw out some suggestions to look at?

as far what CB to get, I like the Cobra 18 WX http://cobra.com/products/mobile-cb-...d-noaa-weather
If you have a single stereo, it will fit perfect under the radio, making look factory, lol
but with any radio (CB) make sure you get a good antenna, and get the SWRs set.
Heres the best pic I can find real fast, its in my old 3rd gen, but you get the idea, lol
