Swapping a 4th gen steering wheel to a 3rd gen, Possible?

More and More I find myself wanting factory steering wheel controls. The only problem is that I have a 3rd gen, which never offered steering wheel controls. So my question is, if I pulled the steering wheel and the wiring harness associated with the buttons, would I be able to get it to work? I have an extensive knowledge of electronics and I know I can handle it, as long as it will work with the steering shaft of my 3rd gen. Also, would I run into problems with the airbag not working with the 3rd gens ECU?

Thanks for the input!

From the looks of it, the 2000-2002 Sienna uses the same steering wheel/airbag as the 01-02 4Runners and they have the audio switches. You should check it out and see how they're mounted/wired and see if it's a possibility to add onto your 4Runner. It would save you a lot of money if you can reuse your steering wheel and airbag (and eliminate any compatibility issues with the airbag). Just a suggestion and maybe a lead to helping you get the controls.

I just got through putting in a leather wheel with audio controls/bluetooth controls on my 4th gen and am finding it really convenient. The cost was a bit steep since I had to get a new airbag.

Hope that helps.
