what is the alarm light on center console of 1997 sr5

i just bought my 1997 4runner sr5,when i bought the truck it only had one key and nothing else, the owners manual was from a 96 and i was wondering what the little light in the center console with what looks like a little speaker on it was for, is it just a standard thing to have in the vehicle? or is something that came with the factory alarm? thanks for the help

Does the LED light up/flash when you lock the car? If so, you've got a factory Toyota alarm, which didn't come standard. The speaker grill is the microphone for the glass breakage sensor. I think you can buy the proper remote and have it programmed for your truck.

I just recently purchased a '97 Limited. From what I have figured out the alarm will only arm itself by locking with the keyless remote. Locking with the key or pushing power lock button does not arm the alarm.

I also learned if you lock the vehicle with the keyless remote and then unlock with the key it will set off the alarm. So if you lock with the remote, be sure to unlock with the remote. I scared my wife and kids to death one morning. :o)

Someone has told me a car dealer can provide a report by using the VIN number of your vehicle. From what I understand it will tell you the list of equipment (standard & optional) when it was built. I've never tried this before so I don't know if they can do this or not. Maybe someone else can shed some light on this for you. Good luck!
