Nice tires CJ3flyr, that is a very tight fit though, ....., amazing that there is no rubbing with the tire turned one way or the other, especially in reverse. I have 265/75/16 on mine with a 2.5 lift, just added 1.5 spacers, and the front ones rubbed big time when turning back and forth. I trimmed the front inside of the tire well and they are good now, the rear of the tire well is still rubbing some, even after trimming, trimming again, and then trimming some more. I even had to slice about .25" off the end of my rock slider inside corner. I think my next project will be the 1" body lift and then should be able to go to a 285 next time, even with the wheel spacers.

I think there's two big factors: 1) Paraordance and I are NOT running any type of wheelspacers. If we went with a wider tire we'd need the spacers (like everybody else) to eliminate the rubbing on the UCA. It seems that once the wheels get pushed out then fenderliner/mudflap rubbing become an issue. I would guess you might get away with 275/70/17's with little or no work on the fenderliner, that's it. An inactive member named Spaceman put 275/70/17's on his stock T4R with little or no issue IIRC. http://www.toyota-4runner.org/perfor...rry-delay.html 2) We didn't cross the threshold to tires bigger than 32.x. IIRC a 32.4" is the max for the spare tire area and probably the same for the rest of the vehicle. The GYSA is sold as a 32.1" tire.

For aesthetic reasons I would like wheel spacers on the back. I am very pleased with the look of the front. I hesitate though because I drive on the highway; often in the rain. It just seems to me that a different track in the back does nothing but encourage the inherently lighter rear end to hydroplane. I may try it...

I plan to do a 1-1.5 body lift which should help with the rubbing even more - but I have trimmed now to where it no longer rubs. I really like the spacers, they give it a more aggressive stance and I like the looks better. SHould look even better once I get the lift. I will be wheeling for several days next weekend, so I will see how they do on the trails.

I'm pretty tempted to pick up a set of the 255/75/17 Goodyear SilentArmors from Tire Rack -- that's a great price going right now, plus there's the $40 rebate on top of it.

Just so I'm totally clear: CJ3Flyr - you're using the 255/75/17 GY SilentArmor on a totally stock suspension 4Runner, and no rubbing problems at all?

FWIW, mine is a 2008 SR5 4WD, 100% stock suspension, stock wheels, stock running boards and mudflaps.

OTHER than suspension mine is stock, stock rims, no wheel spacers. My 4Runner has a slight lift, 1.5" front, .5" rear. Paraordnance does have a TOTALLY STOCK 4Runner, no lift and he has no issues. Neither of us are having any rubbing issues. I can tell you I am thrilled choice in size and so far the tires are great.

More than one has put the 255/75/15 BFG Mud-terrain on a stock 4th gen with no issues as well.

Thanks - good to hear. I think I'm going to do it.

I was waiting for the stock Dunlops to wear out, but this is too good to pass up. I'll try to sell the Dunlops on craigslist, or if I'm lucky, maybe the tire shop will want to buy them.

Thumbs up

I just returned from a 1200 mile road trip to Florida. I love this size and like the GYSAs.

1) The mileage was great, better than I used to do on the OE CT's. I know that sounds like BS but it's true. I was haulin' and delivered high 18's. Going the same avg moving speed (75.6mph from GPS tripmeter) I would have been in the mid-high 17's on the OE tires. Considering these are an A/T that's amazing IMHO. Some less aggressive, all-seasons in this size would be even better

2) The noise was fine. I have decided the only time the GYSA's are a touch louder is below 50mph or so when there's no wind noise. Above 50-55mph the minor wind & engine noise overpowers the tire noise and you don't even hear them.

3) These tires rock in the rain.

4) The MPG readout is as close as any vehicle I have ever seen. It was within .4 on all fill-ups. It averaged .1 or .2 optimistic. This was corrected, hand calculated for odometer error due to the taller tires.

5) ZERO sway or instability issues in spite the much taller (than OE) profile. I had a Hitch-Haul rack with 200lbs, 100lbs in the cargo area, and 150lbs worth of dog in the vehicle. Part of the ride was fairly windy and there were no issues. I had a few moments of virtually no traffic and tried a few quick lane changes, no issues. These are very well constructed tires. All that Silent Armour marketing babble equates to a damn fine tire in terms of ride & stability.

These are great tires and this is the perfect size for the V6 T4R IMHO. There's no shortage of acceleration/performance, good brake performance, no excessive shifting and these are appreciably bigger than stock. I'm so happy... Next time if I can swing it I'll try some Revo2's in the same size. If I can't swing it I'll be VERY happy with another set of the GYSA's

Great to hear you are so happy. I am within a few months of a set of these in a 265/70R17. The gas milage isn't suprizing. I guess the added hight and reduced width outweights it's added weight and any added rolling resistance from a more aggressive tread.

Hambone,

Did you have any rubbing with the wheelspacers? I have the AllPro 1.5 spacers and there is slight rubbing on the wheel liners with the stock tires. Did you do J.A.'s mod?

Thanks - I ordered mine, am picking them up tomorrow. I bought them on a 2-day local sale at Discount Tire ($100 off any set of 4 tires).

For five 255/75/17 tires, mounted + balanced, the total was $560 including tax. I passed on the replacement certificates, as I rarely destroy a tire where I would need that kind of full replacement road hazard warranty. There's also a $40 mail-in rebate from Goodyear which I'm going to send in, but I don't know if they'll honor it on top of the $100 off sale. Can't hurt to try though.

Hopefully I can unload the 5 OEM Dunlop AT20s on craigslist and get a bit more $ back too. The Dunlops look about half-worn.

Wow! That has to be the tire steal of the decade! Congrats

Do you like them so far? I am still happy with mine...

I have a set of snow tires on the 4R now, on a second set of wheels. I just got the Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armors mounted yesterday, so all I can report is that the 255/75/17 fits in the spare tire location just fine.

The GY SA are a much taller tire. Placing it up next to the 4R with the 265/70/16 snow tires on it currently, I wouldn't think they would fit for the front end. (The rear end -- with the raked/higher suspension at the rear -- looks like it will clear fine.) But based on the reports here, it should be OK.

I'll swap the GY SA back onto the 4R in the spring sometime. I usually pull the snow tires around late March/early April.

Thanks again for your help on this.

BTW, also sold the stock Dunlop AT20s on craigslist yesterday -- $110 for the 5 tires. They all had good tread, evenly worn; about 10K miles on the set, so they looked good still. I thought $110 was a fair deal all around for those tires.

I just found a set of the good year tires on craigslist. the heading is Goodyear Wrangler SR-A 255/75/17 m+s. they have 70% tread left and the price is $150 for all 4. I believe these are the oem jeep wrangler tires. is this still a good tire compared to the silent armors listed throughout this thread. I am thinking I should just get them for the size and the price. let me know what you guys think. I know they won't be as aggressive a snow tire but i don't think I can pass up on the price.

That tire is truly an all-season/rain pattern. It's a lower technology, cheaper tire that typically doesn't rate very high. You can read more about it tirerack.com. Tires with the Fortera and Silent Armour labels are the premium line from Goodyear.

If you're expectations are within reason and it provides a good, cheap solution for your needs they may be just the ticket... Try and talk him/her down a bit. If they don't budge $150 isn't a terrible price...

Thanks for your help, I think I am just looking at this as a replacement for the stock tires that are taller to get me by for a while. living in AZ don't have to deal with alot of rain and snow.
