Anyone runing ICON suspension stuff?
Wow, I've never heard of ICON (ICON Vehicle Dynamics) I visited their site and there suspension looks damn impressive....the price is NOT cheap, especially for their stage 5 setup, almost 5,000!
Anyone use ICON stuff on their runner? what's it like? Good on/off road experience?
Super curious now about this company.

There are quite a few guys over at 120 running Icon suspension. I am personally only running their rear coils on my setup. Some of their parts are definitely better than other though, most specifically their rear shocks. I hear good things about their piggyback rear shock, but many guys think their standard shock is not anything special and I know guys who have actually blown multiple rear shocks by them.
Check out Rad Flo Suspension that is sold through Overland Warehouse, that setup uses beefier parts (esp in the rear) and was designed specifically for the 4Runner.

So its ok to mix different suspensions from different companies?
I'm a bit of a newb when it comes to understanding shocks and stuff....
I've heard of the following types of setups:
OME Suspension
Bilstein 5100 with OME springs
Toyotech (which appears to be Bilstein 5100 with OME springs again....) right?
ICON Vehicle Dynamics (and as of now, only the back setup seems good)
Radflo Suspension - this looks pretty nice...buff....but nicely priced. - The stuff at Overland Warehouse looks way way buff. This is the one right? http://stores.overlandwarehouse.com/...kit/Detail.bok
First off....I'm super confused about what a Coil Over is.
The front of a 2006 4Runner uses Coil Overs right?
The rear uses a separate shock and coil right?
how do adjustable shocks....adjust? You measure before installing? What if wanted achieve a 2 inch lift? I don't need spacers right? Just get adjustable shocks?
All these suspension companies and setups have my head spinning!

Yes, you can mix and match if you prefer. Icon is a good brand, but it depends what you want out of them. If you do any fast off-roading you don't want their rear shocks. Mine over-heated to the point that the metal on the shock body distorted in color and shape.
Coilovers refer to adjustable aftermarket front suspension components... Not the stock suspension, OME, etc. The benefits of coilovers such as King, Fox, Icon, etc is that coilovers allow the adjustment of ride height. This becomes especially important when you start adding weight. For example... If you have the medium rated OME and add weight, it will sag and become less controlled. If you start out with the heavy coils, you will have an extremely harsh ride until all of the weight is added (winch, bumper, dual battery, etc). With coilovers, all that is needed is a simple adjustment to accommodate the additional weight. If you have no plans to add weight, you don't absolutely need coilovers, but yes they can essentially just be adjusted to the desired ride height(no spacers needed) which is worth every penny IMO.
King, Fox, Icon, etc all allow valving adjustments. You can get them valved for your specific needs, which allows for better suspension cycling and handling. OME, Bilstein, and other lower end suspensions are "one size fits all" setups.
Lastly, most coilovers excluding Toytec can be rebuilt. When your suspension starts fading, rather than buying an entire new setup you can just get them rebuilt and they are like new. Users with OME will have to make a full suspension purchase again so in the long run coilovers are cheaper.
The Radflo setup on by Overland Warehouse is a great setup. It was designed specifically for our vehicles, whereas most brands are fit for either FJ Cruisers or the Prado. Search on Toyota120 for reviews on the setup, as quite a few guys already have the kit installed.
You are correct as far as the rear components. The shock and coil are separate, and some people mix these as well (i.e. Icon shocks with Sway-a-way coils).
I hope I answered most of your questions... there was a lot to keep track of in your post. If there's anything else you want to know, ask away. Also, list your needs, ride height preference, price range and all of your future plans for additional weight so we can fine tune what would work best for you. Once you narrow down your needs, it becomes much less confusing.

Well lets see....
Right now my 4runner is my daily driver..maybe in a few years I can really start modding it...for camping trips and stuff, but for now....Im keeping it a bit low key.
I don't plan on adding an ARB front bumper or any yet....but for now I think I'd like to obtain some kind of lift. I'm only running 265/70/17 so...nothing big. I'd be interested in a better ride/handling on and off road. I do go camping here and there...even some fishing. Sometimes I have to drive over some stuff to get to a good fishing spot. I would eventually be adding a light bar on top of the roof. I'm not quite sure what I should be looking at for shocks.
I don't need anything super aggressive because I don't need it and I know the ride would be too harsh. Then again, I don't want crap. If I'm going to put some money down, I'll pay for quality.

Check out the "best seller" at Toytec. I bet this would be the right blend of quality/price/application. I will likely do this one in 2 yrs on my 2012!

First off, BlairB and HB 4x4 are really good resources in different suspension setups.
I'll chime in since I'm currently running an ICON setup on 265/70/17's and it's my daily driver. The ICON 's have been great both on and off road. Smooths out the bumps on rough roads, keeps the truck flat around the corners and eliminates the harshness i got with the stock sport suspension. the on road manners are more firm and not at all aggressive. my experience offroading has been limited to fire access roads and snow covered trails and they work perfectly. You won't regret moving to a real suspension over the xreas.
Regarding the front coilovers, it has been great having the adjustability in height since my rear coils actually raised the back end a little over 2" (closer to 3" because i don't carry my gear all the time). So i was able to raise the front high enough to level it out.
As both Blair and HB 4x4 mentioned, consider the Radflo setup. The_josh has this setup and is pretty active on this board so you could ping him for his experience with them.
Hope this helps.

Icon Vehicle Dynamics IVD...Formerly Donahoe Racing
I'm running There 2.5 front coilovers, billet UCA's,and the 2.0 montube rear shocks and springs.
I have had this system in my truck for about a year and have had no issues with them...
Off road performance is as good as the other companies listed....The on road ride is firm..IMO but not too harsh
Off road the system works well from rockcrawling to fast high speed stuff...The piggyback resi shocks will probably be more suited for high speed desert runs..IMO
All in all i am very satisfied with the Icons...Shop around you'll be able to find good deals on them...
BTW:As mentioned the 2.0 rear monotubes are not that exciting..they are sourced from Edelbrock. When and if my rears leak or start losing performance i'm upgrading to the 2.5 Icon piggybacks.

I'm running the Icon coil overs in the front and have over 40k miles on them. So far, they're great. Stiffer than stock on the street, but not objectionable, and no more bottoming out on speed bumps. They're simply terrific off-road. The truck just seems to come alive on dirt roads. I had their rear monotubes for a while. As was posted, they're ok, but not in the same league as the fronts and I've since upgraded to the Radflos. There are several other good coil-over brands, Sway-A-Way and Radflo for two, but I'm very happy with these.
Unless you're real hard core, the Stage One package would be fine. There was a very positive writeup of this set up in the most recent 4wd Toyota Owners mag. The Radflo package from Offroad Warehouse is getting rave reviews too.

I'm running ICON stage 1. Highly recommend it. The ride is soo much better on the road. Soaks up potholes and speed bumps- I actually speed up for bumps. Off-road is awesome too. The front's are adjustable from 0-3.5" of lift. The rear is 2". Looks great with anything from 265-285 tires.
If I purchased again, I would get the piggy back shocks just because they look cool (They weren't available when I bought my system)
2 years and 12,000 miles no issues.

Love this thread, it is very informational in the ICON setup.
Ill be adding a lot of weight in the next couple months (i.e Shockworks bumper/winch, CBI rear bumper and Roof rack). Im looking at the ICON stage 2 but from reading this thread i have moved to getting UCA (coverd bearing thing), front Coilover, and a piggy back rear (if i can find it, i dont know what "piggyback" is).

Stage 1 is just fine. Springs rates are the same. ICON UCA look awesome put are expensive. I went with light racing from here: Make sure you call him, they're cheaper than the online price.
Light Racing Upper Control Arms Toyota Tacoma 05+ -- Fat Bob's Garage Online Store
Piggy back shocks have an external reservoir mounted directly to the body. Remote reservoirs have a hose on it to hold more fluid. Useful in high speed off-road like desert racing where the smaller amount of shock oil would get too hot. No use on the street other than the "cool factor".

Using the ICON coilover front shocks and adding the items use list, the spring coils will not support the weight. With the ICONS fully adjusted out to 2 1/8" your maximum lift will be 2".
