Shifter Knob for '89 4-runner

Hi all, first post. I just bought a new shifter knob for my '89 4-runner but there's a bit of a problem getting the old one off. I had originally thought it was threadded, so i just tried twisting really hard. The knob wouldnt budge, but the shaft of the shifter started tweaking, so I stopped. Then I thought there were set screws holding it on, but to look would mean I had to cut out the fabric lining the knob. And what if I cut out the fabric to find that the knob was permanently attatched? Can anyone here help? Thanks

i have a base model '89 4runner, so it doesn't have the fancy fabric coverd knob. it's just plan plastic. there are no set screws or anything on my shift knob. it's just smooth plastic everywhere. like you, i'd guess it's threaded on like all my other cars, but i've never tried to take it off.
