Adding the Auto Dimming Rear View Mirror

Has anyone ever added the Toyota auto dimming rearview mirror to their 4Runner? I noticed that one of the parts sites had the mirror on sale for 49.95 and I was curious how difficult it is.

diming mirror

i saw the same sale and had the same question.
Just looked at the ltd and the install doesn't seem too bad. you will need to remove that portion of the headliner to plug in power. The kit seems pretty complete.
Do not buy just the mirror itself, as you will be missing many required pieces.

AutoDimming Mirror

I purchased the Autodimming mirror off brandsport.com (this is the mirror only -- NO INTEGRATED COMPASS OR MAPLIGHTS) for $49... It came in a genuine Toyota parts box... easy two wire hookup... had to release the factory mirror off the bracket, slide on the new mirror and tighten the torx screw to hold it firmly in place. Thin two wire hookup runs up from mirror (plasticbracket included to hide wires that lead up to headliner) along the headliner and down the pillar under the dash. I hooked it up to accessory fuse and a ground point under the dash. Works great and looks totally factory. Installation took less than 30 minutes.

Angry Brandsport got smart - Raised the price back up!

Brandsport got smart and realized this could be used on newer model vehicles and raised the price back up to $294!!! I'm glad I bought mine when I found it for $49.

Question Mirrors what to get...

I see that Brandsport now has some aftermarket auto dimming mirrors. I did some research and found that this is the company that manufactures Toyota's mirrors for them.

Should I just get the auto dimming or go all out with all the goodies and get the one with compass and temp? I don't think it's much harder to install is it?

Here are the choices:

Auto Dimming Mirrors

Not sure which one I want to pick up and suggestions?

p.s. just an fyi, if you use the coupon code ttrora when you check out, you can get 10% off your order. ;)

Toyotadude77, where are the manuals "on this site" located? I can't find them. I will soon be installing the mirror I received today from Toyotaparts4u (great service, btw), but I have yet to see a clear picture or diagram showing exactly where the sacred A9 tap wire is (other than somewhere behind the kick panel). Thanks.

toyotaspeed: personally, I would get the auto dimming with the compass because they 4runner, atleast new ones, already have outside temperature and having it in the mirror also would be a bit of overkill. The one thing I always wish i had was a compass though.

on a side note...

does anyone know of a digital guage I could buy (around the size of a turbo timer) that shows things such as battery power, direction... I'm looking for a lil' somethin' somethin'

Thanks Toyotadude and Rando for the replies.
I installed the mirror today (autodim + compass), and it went well. Actually, I poked around with a DVM and found switched power and ground on the connector going to the sunroof motor, so I didn't have to route the wires down to the kickpanel and the "A9" point. Yes, I am lazy, and no, no fuses blown yet! But since the mirror draws relatively little current, I don't think it should be a problem. We'll see.....

Thanks for the thoughts, I ordered the gentex auto dimming with compass . I found that they had the install instruction for the mirror and it didn't look very hard so I'm feeling pretty good about it.
Auto Dimming mirror install instructions.

I'll let everyone know how it goes once it's in. Thanks for the assist.
