Problem with Tire pressure warning

I've had this problem for a long time but haven't been able to figure out how to solve it, wondering if anyone ran in the same problem.

Ever since I replaced the stock rim/tires to 20in. The tire pressure (orange warning light) kept flashing on when I travel long distance of about 100mi plus at a time. I had taken to a different Toyota dealer for them to fix it and the tech said "oh cuz he had on bigger rim/tires so it gave problem." I was thinking how stupid his comment is but anyway he hooked it up to the system and turned it off. But the problem persists everytime I travel far. NOw that light is on everytime I turn on the ignition and it hasn't been shut off. I haven't had time to take it to the dealer that I bought it from cuz they always busy with many other cars unless I take it bright and early in the morning.

I'm just wondering if anyone can give opion or had ran in the same thing. There is nothing wrong with the pressure of the tires cuz I took it to LesSchwab Tire center and they checked all the tires w/o any problem.

Is your spare wheel stock? There's a tire pressure sensor there so that might be giving you problems.

Yes, my spare wheel is stock. Do you know how I can track down teh tire pressure sensor? It can't be still in the stock wheels, can it?

From what I understand, the sensors are behind the valves on the stock wheels (inside the tires when mounted). I don't know if they'd work on other wheels.

Don't know for sure, but if the sensors are part of the valve stems I see no reason why they could not be put on newer wheels. The sensors may need to be adjusted if your recommended pressure is different than 32 psi.

I am curious about this myself so I hope this sting continues to some sort of resolution.

The "light" problem may simply be that the sensor receiver is only recognizing 1 tire transmitter (the spare ) instead of five--But I am just guessing.

I had the same problem when I bought my 4Runner. I had them switch the rims/tires so I could get the Michelins. It took them five tries to get the light out. It finnally took them taking each tire(including spare) off the rim to read the code which is on the inside of the valve stem. They had to enter those codes into my trucks ECU so it would recognize the signal from the stems. The system has been fine for over six months. The only time the light comes on now is when it gets below 20 degrees until the tires warm up. Since I am living up in the NE that seems to happen often.

BTW- Looks like we will be getting ton of snow this weekend. On the order of 18-24 inchs. I am glad that I bought the 4Runner.

Some wheels they cannot put them on because of the size of the sensor. One example is the 20" TRD wheels...

thanks for all ther responses. I had this problem fixed about two weeks ago. I had to take all 4 old tires/wheels back to the shop and had them take the sensors out of the old and put in the new. The light has been off ever since.

Gee, I have none of these tire monitor problems - oh yeah, I've got an 03.

Makes ya wonder - all this techy stuff is way cool, until it goes haywire. Guess that's why to buy a Toyota, cuz hopefully all the stuff will work right then.

tire warning

I'm really impressed with the system. I picked up a roofing nail in my four month old runner tire and the sensor alerted me of the problem at 26 psi. You would think a vehicle this smart would tell you which one.

You live in Arizona. Temperatures rarely get low enough to significantly drop the tire pressure there.

Sound like a good idea, letting you know which tire, but a little problematic.

Because the tires are rotated around your car, and the sensors rotate with the tires, it's difficult to find a way to let you know which tire is going flat. They could etch numbers in your aluminum wheels as use that as a reference, but most people want all their wheels to look the same.

See the problem now?

My point is that I have an 03 which doesn't have the tire monitor system - right?

HMMM. Dunno if 03's got the sensors or not. I was under the impression that they did.

"TireCheck" System

I've been reaing about a retrofit system that measures the distance of each axle from the road. In this way it compensates for any temperature difference etc. And since it's mounted on the ends of each axle, it knows which tire is causing it.

Supposedly the system is super easy to install at around $100. Anybody hear of it?

(I thought of going with those little valve cap indicators, but I'd be afraid they'd "grow legs.")
