Sub Installation Questions

Im using my sub set up out of my 3rd gen which i previously had rca cables. Now i want to put it in my 4th gen and im going to keep the stock speaker set up, just add some bass. Im going to use a line level converter which i havent set one up before. I have a mono amp that runs 350 watts rms to my alpine 12, I have the amp mounted to the box and the whole thing is going in the cargo area on the passenger side. So my questions are: where is the best place (easiest) to tap into the speaker wire for the line level converter? Since its mono i only need either a front, or rear speaker, + and - wire. Does it matter if i only use the right or left speaker, or do i need to use both a right and left speaker? Lastly where is the best place to tap into for the remote wire? I need a wire that is only on when the ignition is turned. Also, the amp has two 20 amp fuses, so does that mean i need a 40 amp fuse at the battery on the power cable or a 20 amp fuse? Thanks in advance!

the remote wire should be a wire that only works with the HU turned on, not just when the car is on. you should be able to find this behind the HU. 4th gens dont have a powered antenna so this would be tricky, but if you have a test lamp you can find this pretty quick.

stay with 20amps. 40 would be too much for the power wire

sorry, ive never used a line converter before so i cant speak for this.

I used a line convertor in my old car. You only need to attach it to 1 speaker, so for convenience I would just tap off the rear passenger door speaker lines. I would tap for the remote on/off behind the head unit. I dont know which wire it is for power for the HU though, but I am sure many a people on here could tell you that one. If the convertor can not be concealed inside the body panels where the speaker wires are (I think my old one was pretty chunky), then there is enough room behind the HU to attach it and tap into the lines there. For RCA plugs from that to your sub, I would rec'd buying some heavy jacketed ones from a place like monoprice.com so that you dont get any interference which could screw up the signal. Here is a link to the cables I used in my home (they are HIGH quality stuff. Even CNET uses monoprice cables for their test labs)
10ft RCA cables. Depending on your setup, you may need either longer or shorter cables.

IMO if you have to tap into a remote wire from the deck, then you should tap into a speaker wire there too. Plenty of room under the dash for the line converter and less speaker wire line/more RCA line would (most likely) have less noise interference.

Here's a good thread on how to take the deck out

If it was me.....I would take it to a stereo shop and talk to them. The wire harness kit for a new stereo would help you figure out what wire the harness would attach to for the remote and you are in business. i tried to look at the link provided but it did not help me....help you lol Maybe you can make more sense of it.

In all honesty, if it was me....well I would get a new deck lol It would give you a little more wattage to the stock mid-highs (not much but it counts) and you would have RCA outs.....done and done. No worry about feedback noise, no wire tapping no line converter.....nada. But if money is an issue at the moment....you way is cheaper.

Tell me what you found on the site....I saw aux amp and it said N/A. What are you going to tap into? I feel silly b/c I can't see what you see.

I feel ya on that one. I am broke after XMAS and me buying a present for myself....a Pionner 920 nav/bt/i-pod/dvd/etc head unit. I'm pretty much tapped right now. But still need to buy a $1K+ used OEM LSD transmission for my track car and I can't see that happening for a few months.

I love the fact you are using slightly used stereo equipment. Put it to good use. Think about what I said about tapping into the speaker wires (for line converter) at the head unit so you can put an aftermarket unit in later...if you want. Then you got your RCA's right there.

Yeah im going to put it below the head unit. im tapping into the speaker wires for the inline converter, and then the gray wire that says "switched" or something to that extent is the remote wire to the amp. it says aux amp n/a because it didnt come with one. i just needed the schematic for the wire locations/colors.
