Struts/Shocks

I have a 1999 2-wheel drive 4-runner with over 200, 000 miles on it. It rides really rough and it is obviously time to replace the struts and shocks. Looking for the smoothest ride possible for highway use. Was going to replace with OEM stuff, but was wondering if someone could suggest a better way to go?

If you want the best ride, get an Old Man Emu suspension kit (springs and shocks). It will ride and handle better than new and lift the truck 2".

Oops, cancel that, I just noticed you're 2WD. I don't think they make 2WD suspensions.

Try some KYB Gas-a-justs

I've got a 97 2WD Limited w/ 150,000 miles that recently had its original front struts and rear shocks replaced with KYB Gas-a-justs all around.

The ride is SO much more refined now.

Over the years I've grown accustomed to the harsh ride over bad roads and now I'm like WOW why did I wait so long to have them swapped.

My mechanic installed them front and back for $400 with an alignment and told me they have a lifetime warranty so bring it back if they ever have any problems.

It would be hard to tell with it put together. But to take it apart, you'd need a tool called a spring compressor, made for struts. Then you'd be able to tell if the strut itself is still good or not when the spring is removed.
