add on toyota satellite radio to stock 4runner radio

hi everyone

new to posting here, though i have read these forums before.

i have a 2007 sport edition 4runner, sport package, with the stock radio. it says it's "type 1" in the manual...so i only have the am, fm1, fm2 and aux buttons.

i would like to add on a toyota certified satellite tuner to my stock radio as seen in type2. type 2 has the satellite function attached to the am button, and i would like to do the same. i don't want to purchase a new radio, just simply make my type1 exactly like the type2.

i've looked around and i don't want to do an external xm/sirius hookup to an aux port because i use that port reguarly and i feel the unit is too bulky. i would like something that is hidden and can be attached to the stock radio i already have.

is this even possible? and if so, how much would it run me and where should i check about this?

i'm a big hands on person and have a good understanding of electronics but am not sure if my request is possible. any and all help is truly appreciated.

if you want the type two hookup, I believe you will need the type 2 head unit. If someone knows more about this then me, please correct me, but I believe the type 2 HU has an extra plug on the back that allows you to plug in the OEM toyota satellite add-on. And also, only the type 2 or type 3 (JBL) radio will recognize the satellite input. Check ebay for a quick switch out.

so unit 1 has no additonal hookups of any kind for satellite radio? hookups only work with unit 2 and 3?

and when you say to check ebay for a switchout, what does that mean?

thank you again.

He's correct. The Type 1 will have no external satellite capability that I've come across, other than running an external satellite radio unit, which is exactly what I did NOT want to do.

I swapped to a Scion head unit, but you could probably also find a Type 2 version on ebay. I think that's what haganwalker meant by checking ebay for a switchout.

You can see the writeup I did here: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/audio-...er-07-sr5.html

All of the wiring is completely hidden and fully integrated. Steering wheel controls work perfectly, and I ran the iPod/iPhone hookup in the center console, next to where the existing aux-in line was.

Let me know if you have other questions or would like more photos/links to the products I got.

I just installed a T1809. Would the scci and isty11 work with that HU as well? I could always sell the 1809 for a cheap 1806 unit and do exactly what you did for the sat radio. That would work fine for me.

Thx

Unfortunately, it does not work with the T1809. I'd hoped to try that unit, but was having a hard time finding a Sirius option that would work for it (and on a budget). Peripheral gives the following reason on the T1809: "NOT compatible with Scion vehicles with Pioneer Organic Color Display," which is what the T1809 uses.

It is compatible with all of the other "Sat-Ready" head units (T1805, 1806, 1808, etc.) that are the more basic display. The 1808 display will be a bit more "red" than the 1806, which is why I did the 1806.

Also, the ISTY11 system will only do Sirius radio, but that shouldn't really matter anymore, since they've merged with XM, and as of 2 weeks ago, all the channels are the same.

Let me know if you need more info or pics. I've got a lot more than I put in the posting.

I can post a few more pictures tomorrow (on other computer), but in the meantime, I've got a couple here, on my install writeup: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/audio-...er-07-sr5.html

One thing I learned tonight, tried to connect my iPhone 3GS for the first time (had only used my iPod previously) is that the audio can be controlled, but won't charge the iPhone. If you want to charge and use an iPhone for the mp3 playback, you need to purchase the ISTY571.

Not sure if this will help you but there are companies which make adapters to interface into factory radios, like Vais, Dice, USATech? and others. I use a Vais/Dice combo and have Sirius and iPod integrated into my 4Gen Nav unit. They have charts on their various websites that will show compatibility.

that is just a chargeing plug that moved on the iphone 3g and newest i pod touch you can purchase a small adaptor that will plug into your existing i pod cable and into the phone and will charge it and still function with your old i pod as well.

so i found this posting on ebay earlier today:

Brand New 2008 JBL Radio 4Runner OEM | eBay

would a 2008 model radio fit into a 2007? are they relatively interchangeable between models in the 4th generation 4runners?

Check the shape/face of that radio compared to yours. The 4th gen has two different climate control bezels depending on the radio. I don't recall which one had what.
