Factory Navigation Issue - Help!

so I just bought my first 4runner, and have an issue with the factory navigation system. its a 2004 Limited and the navigation system works, however when i press the "open" button, the face starts to open, gets to like the first "tilt" position, then returns closed. It wasn't working, then suddenly was opening, closing, and tilting with no problem, now its back to not opening...Any idea what that could be? also, the radio doesn't work, every station is all static. it's like the antenna connection is bad or something? not sure if this is related to the unit not opening or what. any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks-

The only thing I can offer is that maybe the servos are on their way out? I've often wondered how long the face tilt feature will last (which is why I seldom open it) Anyway, I've never heard of them going bad. Does it appear it's stuck on something?? Sounds as though the track on which the face travels on is dirty or obstructed.......How clean is the 4R? About the radio reception....... has it always done this? First thing i would do is check the connections at the back of the NAV unit. Make sure all connectors are tight. Instructions:

How to Remove the Navigation Head Unit from a 2003 Toyota 4Runner

When you bought your truck, was it a CPO? If so, take advantage of the warranty.

Worst case scenario: Check eBay for your NAV unit. Make sure it's an E7005 unit! (that will plug right in AND will come with the stock yellow illumination.

thanks so much for the response. It almost seems like it is binding on something so it just returns to the closed position. its just weird that it started working briefly then went back to not working in the same day. The 4R is immaculate. it has 80k miles, but looks and drives like new. I knew the nav was an issue before buying it, but determined it was so clean everywhere else that it was a small issue... I'm guessing you are right about the radio reception being a connection issue. thanks for posting those instructions, very detailed and helpful. do you think i would be better off taking it to toyota? i mean, it seems straight forward to remove the unit, but also has a lot of "hard yanks" and "firm tugs" in there. i'd hate to break something...

If you are mechanically inclined and have done this before (taring apart a dashboard), the 4R is simple. Just remember, firm brief yanks to take some panels apart. Don't force something or you will break clips (been there, done that). Very few here have taken the NAV unit apart. I wouldn't.....Anyway, try these guys (never used them, but where the 1st on google search..... type, "Toyota NAV repair")

Toyota navigation stereo cd dvd changer repair

They should be able to fix the opening problem. Ask them about the staticy reception. Hopefully it's a loose connection.

Oh, congrats on your purchase!! The 4R is an AWESOME truck.

EDIT: Do this only if your warranty doesn't cover it!

yeah, I feel like I am capable of taking the nav unit out, what I am more affraid of is getting it out and not knowing what to look for (referring to the staic problem, not the opening) though i'm guessing there is just a plug in the back for the antenna?
if i can get the radio working, i will be happy for a while cause at least i could listen to my ipod through it. right now i'm riding in silence. then down the road, i could send in my unit to have the opening problem investigated.
thanks again for the responce

I am quite excited about the new purchase, have wanted a 4runner for some time now! i have a feeling i'll be spending a lot of time on here

Update

Yesterday i followed the directions on how to remove the nav unit. It was a success, as both antenna's were unplugged! Also the two front screws were missing from the nav unit. i think this was causing the unit to sag a bit so the door was just barely hitting on the trim when trying to open. i popped some screws in there and now everything is working perfectly!

thanks for the help
