2003 factory stereo

I have an SR5 with the basic radio (6 speaker 1 cd HU)

I have a few questions...

1) Do I have the JBL stereo system
2)Where is the Factory SUb mounted (the one that comes with teh 10 speaker system)
3) What would you guys recommend if I want to get some more sound out of it.

I will change the HU
but should I also change the Interior speakers too? or do you think that are sufficient enough since im not going to amp them?

I do want to get a SUB, but I want to lose as minimal cargo space as possible (that's why I want to know where the factory sub is usually put cause I know I have a cargo door on my rear side panel and I have seen other SUV's that have a Sub in there)

Thanks Guys! Any info is greatly appreciated!

I believe it is where the right rear cargo compartment is.

The speakers are usually what I change first in the sound system. I've never found stock speakers to be very good, although some factory head units seem to be OK. Just haven't gotten to making any changes on this one yet.

I had the basic stereo and changed out the HU and all the speakers. The factory speakers are only 8 watts, so I doubt if they will work well with a sub.

ok... sounds good... HU and spekers will get ripped out to start...

Next question, I understand that the front 6x9's are a strange 6x9.. it is tough to get an aftermarket pair to fit easily... is this true... any suggestions? I would really rather stay with a 6x9 then to go down to a 6.5...
Thanks

I am in the same situation as ChuckyD, wishing to upgrade the base sound system on my 2003 V6 Sport Edition. When I was buying, I really wanted to get the premium JBL sound system for the 6 disc in-dash player, but the dealer claimed that they couldn't get one in a sport edition in the northeast. Whatever...

Anyway, I'm trying to figure out what my different options are. Ideally, I'd like to find an aftermarket headunit with a built-in 6 disc CD changer. I could care less whether or not there was cassette capability. But searching the web, all I can find are single CD, single DIN headunits that require add-on CD changers in the glovebox or truck. Anybody know of any in-dash, non-cassette type CD changers head units out there?

On a related note, I see quite a few people selling Toyota JBL headunits with the 6 disc changers on eBay. These units are typically stripped out of Camrys. Anyone ever bought one and tried it on a 4Runner?

Finally, I see that on Toyota's website updated for the 2004 model that they list a "6 disc CD autochanger" under the accessories. They claim that it works in dash and upgrades the vehicle's current sound system, but don't offer anymore informatin. Anybody know anything about this unit? Where does it install? Is it compatible with the base sound systems on 2003's?

Thanks for any help and suggestions you can offer,
Chris

Actually I even have another question. What HU's will fit the 4Runner that is larger then din. Which double Din or which 1.5 din? And what kit's are out there... Crutchfield is not helpful..

I know my installer had a hard time finding a kit to fit it, but I don't know what he used in the end or where he got it. If you want, I can call him and see if he remembers. In regard to your front speakers, I haven't heard anything about them being a weird 6x9 size. What I do know is that it is extremely hard to find a 6x9 component speaker (that is what they are). You can find 6x8 component speakers (I think Infinity, Kenwood and Kicker make 6x8s). Good Luck!

Any audio shop can make a template so that you can put 6.5" speaker in place of the 6x9 hole. So, don't let that be the limiting factor.

6x9 speakers will produce more bass than a round 6.5" speaker. However, 6.5" or 5.25" speakers will produce the best midbass/midrange.

I have a really stupid question -- if you replace the head unit, do you lose use of those controls on the steering wheel? I've never had them before on a vehicle where I replaced the stereo.

Personally, I've had good luck with Pioneer speakers in vehicles.

Too bad Klipsch doesn't make car speakers.....
