Question Which aftermarket DVD?

I want to add a DVD system when I get my 4Runner (looking for used 3rd Gen). I want to be able to wire it into my stereo system and also be able to hook up an X-Box or PS2. Anyone know of a system that is car adaptable that I could get that would meet these requirements? Multiple screens would be nice, but not absolutely essential. If anyone knows of any, let me know.

couple of questions for you before adding my 2 cents...

1) do you want an in-dash DVD player or remotely mounted one?
2) do you really want DVD, or just the ability to plug in the PS2 ?
3) do you want the monitors mounted in the dash, on the ceiling, in the headrests?
4) MOST IMPORTANT: how much are you looking to spend on this system

I would add - do you want to be able to move it from this vehicle to another or will it be fixed in place?

re

It will be fixed in the 4Runner, but I'll do the install myself. I'll probably mount the screen(s) in the ceiling. I would prefer a remotely mounted DVD, because I assume it would be cheaper, but if not, I'll take a receiver mounted DVD. I want the ability to play DVDs for road trips, so I do want DVD. The XBox/PS2 will be a later addition and would not be in the 4Runner fulltime. I have to build a speaker box after I get the 4Runner and I would build a mount for the XBox/PS2 there. I'd like to keep the cost of the screen(s) and DVD player under $600.

I know sony has a package deal that has the flip down monitor along with the remote mounted DVD player. I think it's called the Dream System. Check out ebay under "monitor".

Only real issue would be to ensure that your headunit has audio inputs so you can get the sound going from the DVD unit to the car's audio system.

If you don't care for the looks of the sony package. I would recommend checking some of the car audio places in your area and see what brands they use on their custom installs. I know one place here uses Audiovox DVD players along with another brand monitors. But I refuse to put anything Audiovox in my car or in my home.

the DVD player shouldn't be more than about $200-250 tops and then the monitors run anywhere from $100-$800 depending on size.

I would think that you could probably buy 2 flip down monitors and your DVD unit in your price range. Just be patient and shop carefully.

Cool, thanks for your input man, I really appreciate it. My title was a bit misleading. I wasn't really looking for a particular make/model. I was basically just trying to find out if my idea was practical in regards to my budget. It sounds like if I'm careful, shop around, and do the install myself, that I should be able to squeeze it in given my budget. I can go over some, I just don't want to end up spending all of my 'fun' money on one project.

no prob. post some pics up once you get it all done.

I've been planning on taking out my factory Headunit and replacing with a touchscreen and then mounting the DVD in the glovebox, but my problem is finding somewhere to mount an aftermarket headunit to run all the audio. Someone suggested the center armrest console.

The touchscreen would control all the audio, but it would be a pain in the ass to load CD's/DVD when trying to drive the car.

My other plan was to add a Kenwood Keg and then I wouldn't have to worry about the CDs as I would have all my mp3s accessed via the touchscreen.

I may just end up with the Kenwood Exelon all in one unit. It's a touchscreen, DVD/CD/MP3 and it would be the easiest install and would give me all the features of all the components I want in one unit for about the same price. Would solve all my problems in one quick job.

Who knows!?!?!?! I gotta get the cash first, then decide which is the better way to go.

I'll be sure to post some pics when I get it done. But, first I gotta get find a 4Runner. I'm still driving my Jeep right now. Unfortunately it's looking like it's gonna be May before I get my 4R. I'm living on the eastern shore of MD right now and SUV prices are much higher than they are back home (western NC). It looks like it will be May before I get back home, so that's probably when I'll get one. But, I have my folks on the lookout for one and if they find one that's a great deal, I may have to schedule an earlier trip home.
