Question 4th Gen 4Runner Exhaust/Sunroof fault

I too am experiencing the "dreaded exhaust smell" with the rear window down. I was told not to operate the vehicle with the window down ..ha.. nice huh?

Anyway, I found a couple diff replacement exhaust systems... Borla, B & B and Magnaflow... I have use Borla on a VW Corrado and B & B on a 944 Turbo. Any word on how they are on a V8 4.7l 4runner?

BTW... more BAD news for 4th gen 4runner owners........ the sunroof leaks! Yeah, $43k limited SUV with a leaking sunroof! The worst part about it is Toyota recognizes it as a engineering fault and is in the process of redesigning the sunroof and it will need to be retrofitted to the vehicle once complete.. notice I said "once it is complete". They are still in the engineering phase. So now I have to ride around with plastic taped to my sunroof to mitigate the risk of leakage. (the plastic over the sunroof was installed by the dealer today)

The sulfur smell has more to do with the catalytic converter, not the exhaust system. Therefore, changing your exhaust will likely do no good at getting rid of the foul smell.

Here is a thread on it:

http://www.toyota-4runner.org/showth...=&threadid=393

The only way that an aftermarket exhaust MAY help A LITTLE is if it were pointed to the side (like previous generations of 4runners). Again, this will not likely make that much of a difference...and it is only in theory.

Good luck.

Yeah... I am aware of the "sulfur smell", the borla exhaust exits out the sides of the vehicle and I have chatted with multiple people that claim that it does in fact help with the fumes entering the cabin. My heartburn is not totally with the bad smell as it is with inhaling the harmful fumes. Just because you change teh type of gas and reduce the sulfur smell does not mean the problem is solved.

I was hoping to get some feedback on the systems that people have used to see what is goo/bad/better and to convey the latest problem (sunroof leakage) with the forum...

Thanks.

Ah! that sounds better. I always use the conversion: 1/.65 or $32,250. I paid $ 31,175 for mine, that is in North Carolina dollars though with a Toyota Teacher Appreciation $ 500 rebate.

That is a good price for a Limited. Amazing that Toyota started the 4th generation Limited with a MSRP of $40K and people were paying it.

if you have that rear window down, you will get exhaust in the vehicle. It used to happen to me in an old Jeep Cherokee I had and its exhaust was on the side. Same thing happens in vans with the rear windows tilted open.
