To me, it sounds like he took the individual wheels to the UPS store looking to ship them and they said, "if you ship them as pairs, it'll be cheaper". So, the person at the store likely taped them up in pairs and one of them didn't make it through transit. It doesn't seem like it's a sellers fault at all. If anything could have done better, I would have taped the boxes at the store myself.

FWIW, I've shipped a set of wheels like this. However, I knew ahead of time that I was shipping them as pairs. I taped the boxes together much like this but I taped the crap out of them so they wouldn't separate. I also wrote the address everything was going to on every single box, clearly.

The seller could have done a couple things to prevent all this from happening, but in the end, it sounds like it's UPS who really screwed the pooch.

If he had used or ensured UPS used decent tape then there would not have been any issues. One roll of Gorilla Tape is like $8 and two passes around the boxes would have kept them together, much better than the cheap-o clear tape that was used.

It's still amazing to me how little the seller cared and his total lack of assistance. What a douche.

My sister just bought a 4runner from carmax. They do seem fairly ignorant. The vin was different on just about every piece of paperwork, lets just see how getting that TTL goes...

Most of their used cars have at least one accident or some other issue. I almost bought my GX470 from them but luckily they helped open my eyes. It came in from another store, they told me I could come look at it but not drive it. Wtf. I asked wtf and then was told they had to repaint some areas. No thanks. Went and got one from a Lexus dealer for the same price after some haggling.
I don't think much of the place or their employees, ole niteroast didn't help boost their rep any.

If that's the case this store had no idea what it was doing. You don't tape the boxes together. You use banding straps and then tape those straps where the tensioner is. FWIW

I agree @TXTRDPRO , but I still think it's mostly the shipping companies fault. I think too much blame is being placed on the seller @Tuco Ramirez . He likely didn't know they were going to be shipped in pairs when he got there and the UPS store probably assured him it would get there safely.

If you can't take a shipping companies word on whether or not your package will be shipped correctly then who's word do you take?

Otherwise, do all the prep yourself and drive the package across the US to wherever it needs to go.

I get the frustration. I'm pretty sure a FedEx driver stole one of my packages or the place he/she "delivered" it to kept it and hasn't said a word. Unfortunately, this item was custom and I had to reorder it (and wait all over again). Not to mention the numerous times the USPS has lost my package completely and I never got it.

All I'm trying to get at is you can't fully place the blame on the seller here, unless you know for a FACT he was purposely negligent with shipping your wheels. Otherwise, it's all speculation.
