The dealer stated the FJC has a white roof because it is an offroad vehicle for safaris. If you are ever stuck and someone needs to see you from above, you can. He also mentioned something about ducktaping an X on the top if you out there and need helicoptor assistance in a jungle of course.

I think the white roofs are badass, especially in hot places. If you have a black or dark colored rig, and actually spend A LOT of time on the trail in the sun, white is pretty awesome.

I always loved the white roof, it's retro. However, it requires a lot of waxing. I don't think it was 2 staged cleared, more of a single stage integrated clear.
The real question is why aren't jeep underbodies Orange? Wouldn't they be easier to spot rolled over from a rescue helicopter.

To my knowledge, the white roof is a throwback to the retro.
One may ask, Why was the retro white?
Because the old tops were fiber glass which was difficult to paint. at the time.

Look at a photo of an FJ Cruiser next to an FJ-40 from the same perspective and you'll see the similarities between the two: round headlights, bezel with TOYOTA in block letters, the intake on the front of the hood, white top, the cursed vertical windshield, etc. There's a decent picture of a blue FJ-40 sitting next to a blue FJ Cruiser on the ih8mud forum, but I don't want to link it here. I love the styling of the FJ Cruiser and the white top on the one I had. I still have the white top on my 1964 FJ-40.

When the FJ first came out that white roof actually kept me from buying it. I went with an Xterra instead.

I really didn’t know much about 4WD SUV’s back in the day and might have did the same thing, but knowing what I know now about the FJ/4Runner and the Xterra… I would not let the roof color prevent me from buying a FJ.

I just bought a 2020 Off Road TRD 4Runner and am very glad I did. I still have the Xterra, but it doesn't compare IMO. I'm an old guy now, and hopefully the 4Runner is the last car I will have to buy.
