Hey all, after months of design and building various versions of a swing-out tire carrier that didn't break the bank but was more sturdy than something like a Wilco, or other fold-down type carriers I finally have settled on something that works for me.
A couple of local guys have inquired about this solution, and originally I wasn't going to be building any other iterations other than what I settled on for the personal 2003 4runner, but after speaking with some local vendors with regards to getting some of the material cut and machined with them so I don't have to do it in the garage it looks like I may actually be able to produce a couple more at a half-way decent price..
If anyone is interested in the details I can get into the nitty-gritty about the different iterations and all, but long story short, here are the details:
-Hitch-mount style swing out carrier
-tightening wedge-style hitch to reduce wobble
-secondary u-bolt style clamps for hitch to further reduce all movement
-hiem-joint pivot style that works with virtually no sag while carrying my 35x12.5" tire and a 48" hi-lift jack, which is quite a bit of weight.
-2000lb latch to hold the swing-out closed.
-secondary drop-pin for a backup to keep the swing out from opening even if the latch were to fail.
-Can included a pre-installed mounting studs for a hi-lift jack
-main tube is 2x4" tube, 1/4" wall, the rest is a 2x2" square tube 1/4" wall.
-license plate mounting to drilled/tapped holes on the swing-out arm.
if anyone is interested in one of these please feel free to reach out to me. I am not planning on producing more than a few of these, but figured I would ask if there was any interest while I am getting material together for the 2 that I am going to be later next month.
It looks like I should be able to make these for around $700. If you want to have these powder coated that'll be up to you as I have no means to do that. Mine is prepped, primed with etching primer, and painted over with black truck bed liner paint which gives it a nice texture and look.
It would be a lot easier to meet locally, I am located in Charlotte, NC, but could probably figure out a way to ship for not too too much money, but these are north of 60lbs in weight and kind of bulky so it may be hard to ship cheap.
Anyhow, please feel free to reach out and I can provide more details if anyone would like.
Thanks for looking.
