--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In '85 , my parents and myself bought 2 dealer ordered new '85 4Runners.
My folks got an SR5 in Gold with a Black shell also. This SR5 came with every option except power door locks and the sunroof. My mom was afraid it might leak some day. We spent summer after summer wheeling the "Great Divide" in Colorado and around my home from Phoenix to Flagstaff.
My folks SR5 stayed bone stock , never even had the shell off until I inherited it in 2000. The rest of the story is fairly obvious. 220,000 miles and still kickin' it up.
Exterior :
Complete desert tan base coat , then over the top freehand airbrushed and stenciled "CAMO", then splatter speckeled . Blacked out all chrome trim and grill . Bushwacker fender flares with the rear shortened due to no lower body molding trim . Custom built front and rear bumpers with built in recievers and flood light mounting tangs for 4 x 130 watt quartz halogen offroad lights. Rear bumper mounted swing away rack and full size spare . 48" Hi-Lift Jack mounted to rear door . Removed factory spare tire rack and added a mounting plate that gussets back to stiffen rear bumper to frame . New Front Windshield . Removable Tow Yoke for flat towing on distant Wheeling & Hunting excursions.
Interior :
Completly removed all interior trim panels except dash , console and headliner . Added slip-on CAMO seat covers and camo padded console armrest . Keep the floor pan rubber plugs in the glove box. Rinse and Repeat.
Drive Train :
At 187,000 miles swapped in a new long block crate motor 22RE with a mild cam upgrade , Center Force 2 clutch , new exhaust without a catalytic converter. K&N Lifetime Filter . Renewed the front knuckles & bearings . Changed both Diffs to "Genuine Gear" 5.29's . Added a Detroit True Track EZ-Locker in the rear. Custom built 1 ton rated rear drive shaft . Brakes all around including master cylinder . OPTIMA Red Top with switch blade disconnect to be able to flat tow with the steering unlocked .
Genuine Gear did the Ratio calculation and I tested before and after tire up size finding that RPM is relatively unchanged from stock 4:10 ratio and tires . Still pulls like stock including Overdrive . Suggest changing to a Racing Belt Harness if intending to drive over 60 MPH .
Suspension :
Superlift 5" Springs on front , 4" block and add-a leaf on rear . Drop Down Draglink . Pro-Comp Shocks and Steering Stabilizer.
Wheels and Tires :
12.50 X 15 X 36" TSL Swampers ( 5 ) on Black Steel Billet rims
Stereo :
Added AM-FM single disc with aux mp3 jack .
Replaced dash speakers and added 2 all weather marine speakers .
