Well, it is that time- the "Project Manager" has given the directive to reduce the number of vehicles I have, so I am putting my (soon to be yours?) 2000 4Runner up for sale. It's a 3-4 day a week car for me, but lately I have only been averaging about 10 miles a day with the whole work from home sitation. Actual mileage is 220,999 as of tonight, but shouldn't be much over 221k at the time of sale as I am a bit of a car crazy and have other vehicles I can drive instead.
There is a chance this ad will contain a little more information than you are looking for, but I never appreciate someone trying to sell a car for thousands of dollars with 4 sentences and 2 pictures. I am assuming everyone here is pretty familiar with the specs, but please feel free to message, call, etc. if you have any questions related to that.
A little history:
I purchased the 4Runner from the original owner in late 2008. Original owners lived in Washington and Oregon when they had the 4Runner. It has always been in San Diego County during my 11 1/2 years of ownership. I'll dive into maintenance in that section below, but this has been a wonderful vehicle to me and has taken me on all kinds of crazy snowboard, surf, and mountain bike adventures. I don't think this will be a big surprise, but it has also been a ridiculously reliable vehicle and, aside from expected maintenance for something 20 years old, has been very reasonable in terms of cost of ownership. This has also made it a bit difficult to part with- I think I first said I was going to sell it in May of 2017. I guess things take me a little while to get around to.
Maintenance:
I really enjoy working on cars (simpler things), so I have always done the easier routine maintenance like oil changes, plugs/wires, etc. I have a great mechanic in San Diego that I use for bigger things (Lee's Japanese Car Specialist). I have all of the original owners service records and all receipts for everything I have done. Here are some recent highlights:
220,886 - New battery from Costco (I think I got 6 years out of the other one, so I thought it might be nice before I sold it)
220,000 - New OEM Toyota spark plugs and MAF sensor clean (I did new blue NGK wires last time around and typically do them every other)
220,000 - Oil/filter - every 5k, never an exception. I always use Mobil 1 full synthetic and K&N HP-1002 oil filters
218,318 - New Starter
215,000 - I decided to do a bunch of things at once to maximize some labor costs.
- Valve Cover Gasket
- Water pump, timing belt, AC belt, alternator belt, power steering belt
- Input shaft seal (original was leaking a bit)
- Clutch (didn't really need to be done, but had the chance to do it for the cost of parts)
- Rear main seal (Again, technically didn't need to be done, but for $60, seemed like a hell of a deal!)
178,421 - Updated front rotors and pads (Originals had the crazy shuttering sometimes on long descents, but the updated ones Toyota came out with are pretty fantastic and completely solved the issue). I was thinking about doing the Tundra upgrade, but my mechanic swore by these.
I can give you the rest of the records going back to zero miles as well.
How does it run, drive, startup, etc.?
For a 20 year old vehicle, I would say it is pretty fantastic. It starts right up every time, drives smooth, shifts well, etc. It doesn't burn oil, have any leaks, etc. You will see in the pictures that I replaced the original wheels with some 5th gen 17's. I wanted to keep more of a stock look and these really seem to go well with the overall vibe of the truck. They were take-offs from a new 5th gen and have about 9k on the OEM tires (which are admittedly not anything to write home about). The last thing I wanted to do was something suspension-wise like OME, but never got around to it.
Any concerns?
Not many for a 20 year old vehicle- these are the things that I wanted to fix, but never really got around to it as they were liveable
- Costco carwash ate the stock antenna - that is what you get for trying to go retro and listen to the radio on the day you go to the car wash. I thought this would be a simple thing to do, but apparently it is a little more involved than I thought. I don't really care much for r radio, so this hasn't been a huge deal for me.
- Rear passenger window motor is not 100% - I think one of the gear teeth is broken. It is still usable, but requires some help to get it to catch and go up. This should be replaced, but I don't have the technical know how to take the door apart.
- Burned out bulb (s?) in the center stack. Speedo lights are fine, but the lights for the stereo and HVAC are burned out. Again, not a huge deal for me as I know this car like the back of my hand and the controls are, well, pretty simple.
- Couple interior scratches on passenger door plastic and dash by airbag. I was carrying some metal shelving brackets and someone pulled out in front of me. I feel like this is a pretty minor thing to list, but, I don't know, I think it is good info.
- Corner vinyl trim by glove box/airbag is separated a bit. Every 2000 Gray/blue interior 4Runner I have seen has this. I would say mine is pretty normal.
