1997 4Runner Limited 4WD - Raleigh, NC and surrounding

Hello Everyone,

The time has come to let go of my 1997 3rd gen. I am going to be very detailed in my description of the truck so I apologize in advance.

Short History: My Dad and I purchased this truck from a family friend who unfortunately passed away. She worked as a traveling home health specialist around the Triad (Winston-Salem, Greensboro) area of NC. This vehicle was used as her "bad weather truck" and as such was only driven during the winter time. As we all know, NC doesn't get much in the way of bad weather so needless to say, this truck sat for most of it's life. After she passed, her husband had no interest in this vehicle since they owned 3 other vehicles. We desired a spare vehicle for errands around the house and decided to purchase this truck from him. My dad is more or less the family mechanic and as such, our family friend would call him towards the end of every October and ask him to look over the 4runner to make sure that is was road ready (check oil, tires, etc.) which is why we were inclined to purchase it once she passed.

Outside of my Dad's check-ups, the previous owner took this truck the dealership for everything from oil changes to recalls to brakes to greasing the door jambs (yes that is actually on one of the service records). Once we got the truck home, we opened the glove box to find lots of service records from Modern Toyota in Winston-Salem. We got the truck with around 124k miles almost 2 years ago. The truck currently has 130k miles so we've put on 6,000 miles. We have service records for everything beyond 44kish miles. Not sure who owned the truck before our family friend.

The Bad: As mentioned above, this truck spent most of it's life sitting uncovered on the side of their house so the paint is pretty bad. The hood and roof are the worst, but the doors and OK, minus the painted fender flares that came with the limited trim. It was clear that our family friend spared no expense on maintenance, but she didn't care too much for washing or storage. As such, the truck has surface rust on some parts of the underbody and the rear bumper has little dots of rust across it. Within the last 2,000 miles, a check engine light came on and code reader listed it as P0446. We took the easy route and replaced to gas cap, but to no avail. Since there is no difference driving or any smells, we elected to not continue chasing the code. Since the truck is a 1997, it still passes inspection in NC.

My ownership: Dad has 2 pickup trucks (Silverado and Sierra) and I have a car and Ford Expedition so we aren't treating this truck any better (except for actually washing it and keeping it in the garage). I moved to Raleigh./Wake Forest for work and decided to leave the Expedition at Dad's and take the 4runner as a backup. Ironically, the 4Runner mostly sits and was driven to my job once or twice a week to keep the battery charged. We've driven it around our neighborhood once in 4WD when it snowed in NC a year ago.

Maintenance Performed: As you'd expect. We have had little to no issues with this truck mechanically. My Dad replaced the Master Cylinder, but i'm not sure why since the truck didn't have any braking problems. Brake pads were also replaced. I replaced the front bumper (since it had rust on it) with a brand new metal bumper and replaced the front lower fender flare finishers at the same time. I cleaned the interior, but the carpet needs a good shampoo job. I replaced the tires with fairly aggressive Pathfinder allterrains from Discount Tire and paid to get the truck inspected once while living in Raleigh. We changed the oil twice (3,000 miles). We also replaced the power up/down antenna since the old once was bent. I replaced the license tag lights with LED bulbs and replaced a brake light bulb. One of the fog light bulbs are blown..Almost forgot to mention that.

This truck is bone stock. The only mod that I can think of is the all terrain tires that are slightly larger than stock. This truck has been amazing and the build quality is insane. It never hesitates to start and doesn't produce and rattles or noises. I just runs and runs. I took all maintenance records and stored them in a 3 ring binder. I also included all receipts for work done since i've driven in the binder as well. I decided to post this truck for sale on this site first because I really would prefer to sale this truck to an enthusiast who will take care of it and use it as it was intended to be used... and maybe sell it back to me one day :-) I have a TON of pictures that I will share via the link below since they probably won't fit in this post. Price is $7k obo. I'd be more than happy to PM, call, text, facetime or email.
