Exclamation WTB 3rd Gen 4Runner in CA

Ideally, I'm looking for a stock 1999 4Runner Highlander (aka Limited) model with a 3.4L V6, 5-speed manual transmission, e-locker, 4.30 gears and factory tall coils.

I'd like it to be in very good condition, but that's a relative term for a 22-year old vehicle.

It's not a perfect world and I understand that I may not find everything I want, but I think that what's in my list above would be perfect to start with. The V6 and manual transmission will be a must-have. I plan to add a hand throttle to the 5-speed to simulate that third foot that I seem to be missing.

My thoughts are that I would drive it on and off highway for a while "as is" while I decide what I want it to be when it grows up.

It will end up being some type of overland build that leans toward solid off-road capability, but retains its highway manners. It may be that I only replace the components that will benefit from stonger aftermarket parts. I just don't know enough about 4Runners yet to know what those components will be. Hopefully, this forum will be a place that will help me understand what should go on my laundry list of things to modify in their order of importance.

I have a 1985 Jeep Scrambler that's built as a rock crawler and I actually drive it to a trail. This 4Runner will be a mild build compared to that. The 4Runner will be something that will be more comfortable on a road trip. The Jeep on a highway with a bit of wind can feel like a ride at a Six Flags theme park and that can be exhausting on a long drive.

I look forward to getting to know you all!

Christian

Thumbs up

I found a nice stock 1999 4Runner SR5 in Portland, OR. I drove up on Monday from Los Angeles, looked at it and bought it on Tuesday (today). The 15 hour drive to Portland was a bit long, so I'll drive it back to L.A. on Wednesday and Thursday. I'll probably register it at the DMV on Friday.

Then the weekend is made for starting some gasket replacements, front crankshaft seal, timing belt and new lower ball joints. I may take the running boards off and start thinking about rock sliders next. Front and rear bumpers and swing out tire carrier will quickly follow along with a winch.

I've got a lot of research to do about all of these things with an emphasis on keeping the parts as light as possible without compromising strength.

Let the games begin!
