FS: 1996 4Runner Limited - $3,000 OBO - Harrisonburg, VA
1996 4Runner Limited (3.4L, Auto Trans) - 328k miles
PRICE DROP: $2,500 OBO (updated as of 1/14/24), would really like to get this sold by this weekend. Please let my loss be somebody's gain!
I am reluctantly listing my beloved 3rd gen for sale, as I am moving soon and no longer have space for a second vehicle. I bought this car 3-4 years ago as a single family owned vehicle, making me the second owner, and it has served as an off-road project/backup vehicle for my family and I. The car runs and drives but does suffer from the transmission overheating issue when driven at highway speeds for more than an hour or so. The engine doesn't have any known issues, as it still has great power and smooth delivery without any oil consumption. I want to heavily emphasize, I would NOT recommend this car to serve as someone's only vehicle unless you plan to repair or replace the transmission to remedy the trans overheating issue beforehand. I frequently use this car for low- to mid-distance trips without any issues. Highway speeds have been the only problematic situation.
The good: the interior, aside from the driver seat, is in fantastic condition for it's age, and frankly looks as good as my 5th gen's. Sunroof and rear window both still work great. When properly cleaned up (which I admit has been awhile) the paint seems to be in decent to good shape. I am not nearly as familiar with single stage paint, but I do know that the paint still has more shine to it than any of the other 50+ 3rd gens I drive past everyday lol.
NEEDS (and any other negative things to note):
- Transmission repair or replacement (overheats on long, highway-speed trips)
- Trunk latch (has fully failed and will not open or close rear hatch)
- Rust patch in driver door jamb and rust hole in rear driver door jamb (shown in photos)
- Backup camera cable repair (got cut in half by uncovered metal edge where the cable was fished through in rear hatch)
