About a year and a half ago (Spring time of 2012) I bought a 1995 4 Runner with 141,000ish miles on it.
It looked immaculate and drove extremely well on the test drive.
I drove it for about a year and a half and then it started making some bad noise (sounded like wheel bearings).
Took it to my mechanic and they discovered a TON of issues.
Decided to trade it in...according to car facts...it last had a reported mileage of 195,000ish back in 2005...
Yeah I got scammed and I feel stupid for not getting a Car Facts or at least taking it to a mechanic.
The good news to the story, those chain of events made me fall in love with the 4 Runner in general and I bought a new 2013 TR 4 Runner (September 2013).
Anyway, I bought a roughed up 4 Runner, but I then realized...it made it to 200,000++++ miles with very little going wrong. I feel pretty darn confident I will have my new one for the next 10-15 years.

I'm in the market and you need to cough up 100 bucks for a thorough inspection (Triple A charges 89 for an 86 point inspection), along with a carfax. If you are going to cough up some serious dough for a used car...spend the small amount to avoid yourself the future headaches!

Disappointment
I bought a lien sale T4R because it only had 18k miles, the odometer now reads 21k and i decided to do some research and found out that the odom got cracked.. it has 221k! What a disappointment. Trying to trade for a manual tacoma now.

Odometer fraud seems pretty pervasive in Canada as well. One example I came across recently was a local 3rd gen ad claiming only 90k miles with a complete service history. But, while looking through the service paperwork, discovered it had over 300k and 3 timing belt replacements....

they want to make money like everyone else, and if they right person comes in they'll by the base model stripped to the core for the price of the loaded model with every option there is. That's why people need to do research before they buy.

Just a point to add, I almost always buy vehicles with high mileage already. Have a mechanic shop inspect what you want, and if the vehicle looks good, pull the trigger on the deal. People that advertise high mileage know that they're going to take a massive hit on the price and also being able to move the vehicle quickly, so you can usually score some great deals.
Besides, low mileage is bunch of crock anyway. I'd rather have a half million mile car for half the price than a "low mileage" example that may or may not have been treated right (or rolled back).
Case in point, last vehicle I got was a Corolla with 380k miles on it (02' delivery car). Paid $1,100, whereas a comparable "low mileage" Corolla would have been 5-10 times more at the time. So far the "Old Rola" has made it to 510k and still ticking. Compression is a little low, but who cares...
On the other hand, my Civic Si I just got rid of was a one owner car with 31,000 miles on it, dealer serviced from day one. It's already needed the transmission rebuilt (famous 3rd gear syncro issue), an alternator, and the A/C compressor replaced, so low mileage is little guarantee of a good car.

I guess, with a 4runner, mileage would be the least of your concerns...

I was wondering when someone was going to get on point...I always buy high mileage and then spend the money making it a low mileage equivalent, for half the price of a low miler. I also benefit by knowing exactly what I have. I look for a vehicle that is solid enough to build something out. Every used car I have ever bought has been gone through end to end, and I know exactly what I have.
Occasionally we buy something low, but it usually for a dd, or in the case of our new ford, a comfortable road trip car. It is the second new car I have owned and got it discounted the new car mark up...so I made out like a train bandit.
I currently have a 2nd gen, high miler. I picked up for nearly nothing. I have an interested buyer, but I am actually hoping he backs out so I can make it my next build. I will likely need a trans, and possibly and engine, but when complete, it will be a low mileage equivalent, with a lot miles in from of it.

Looking around
Looking to own our first 4Runner.
We are looking to buy a 4Runner to drive 3900 mile through Mexico to Belize and then use as a daily driver in the hills at a higher elevation in Belize the Cayo district.
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
I'm interested in what year models are most reliable, which engines, and stock ground clearance, etc...
The roads are rough, but we're not planning to go off road. Although most would consider these roads as off road especially in the rainy season.
Cheers!

I've heard that their is a way to check if odo is real or not in the computer, but of course, if that has been changed also...

my wife and i are having our first baby in june so we decided it was time to get her a more dependable, safer car. bought her a prius a few days ago with 97,000 miles. Turns out it's actually 297,000. we're super bummed about it. they even forged the title to make it match.
currently under police investigation, but i really doubt they'll find anything.
ALWAYS run a carfax report, folks! learn from my mistake. even if it seems like everything is good to go, run it anyway.

Texas is great, we make everyone get annual safety and emission inspections.
Each year the mileage is reported.

This thread is the first I am hearing of this sort of fraud being pervasive. I'd be much more skeptical buying from a used car dealership where a technician knowing how to roll back odometers could be employees, but I buy most of my vehicles in private sale. I think the chances of being defrauded regarding mileage are fairly slim in a private sale. The only means most private sellers (owners) have to fake the odometer is to replace the gauge cluster with that from a lower mileage vehicle.
I only buy vehicles used, and usually with more than 100k on them, but I still think mileage is an important factor in the decision making process. They big variable is engine wear, where most modern engines are only intended to run to 200k or 300k miles. Sure you might find that some examples are maintained meticulously (oil and factory specified maintenance performed at the correct intervals), but most have the normal oil change every 3-5k, sparkplugs and air filter every 60k or so, and that's it.
