I've been on the search lately for a 4R up in the northeast area and have found several "low milage" that when I checked carfax the numbers didn't match up or the the car vs the miles didn't add up. Go on youtube and you can find a ton of videos of people showing how easy it is to do.

I think the chances of being defrauded regarding mileage are fairly slim in a private sale. The only means most private sellers (owners) have to fake the odometer is to replace the gauge cluster with that from a lower mileage vehicle.

I only buy vehicles used, and usually with more than 100k on them, but I still think mileage is an important factor in the decision making process. They big variable is engine wear, where most modern engines are only intended to run to 200k or 300k miles. Sure you might find that some examples are maintained meticulously (oil and factory specified maintenance performed at the correct intervals), but most have the normal oil change every 3-5k, sparkplugs and air filter every 60k or so, and that's it.
fyi-- Everyone around northern California knows that you are not supposed to trust the odometer of any car coming from Silicon Valley. There are even ads on craigslist in San Jose for guys who will come to your house, plug in some gizmo that they invented and drop your mileage to whatever you want for $40. No talent required, just 10 minutes and your car suddenly sells for 5000 more than it is really worth.

Wow, i'm searching for a 4runner today. I knew it was possible as I'm a firmware engineer and it wouldn't be hard, but I didn't realize how often it really happens. I prefer to buy used but I do like to see records that show mileage and look at everything else to make sure everything looks solid.

For me, I like buying used because I like customizing my cars and I can't imagine paying full price for a new vehicle just to trip a lot of brand new parts off and void the warranties.

get a carfax, it should have most of the information listed. This makes it much harder to do this kind of thing.

I would never buy used if it didnt have a carfax or accompanying materials for proper maintenance. With that said, I am a hypocrite, I tend to do all my work on the older cars myself.

I only take in my 2013 86 to dealer due to warranty.

yes checked what happened to me: Hello! Bittersweet Purchase

granted I got it for a really good price and it runs great and there possibly could be the engine that matches the odo but not sure i'll ever know!

I like how the OP in the top Sticky Thread in the 'For Sale: Vehicles' forum is a warning against buying a used car. Not even a "Hey, be wary" warning, but essentially saying that buying a used car is stupid.

Seriously though; CarFax. Makes this nice and easy. Unless they unplugged their gauge cluster after they left the dealership lot, Carfax will catch any ODO discrepancies. You'd want one anyways for basic maintenance history, anyways

THIS. Be Wary. I've been on the market for a 3rd Gen 4Runner. All the postings in the SF Bay/San Jose Area. I've contacted several of them but everytime it gets to the point where I ask for the vin # to do a carfax they disappear. They wouldn't even subject to a pre purchase inspection because they "want to spend time with their family and they don't have a lot of time".
They also delete and put a new post back up everytime, so you can never find the one you originally looked at... Here are some of the dude's I've contacted. All I believe are scammers.

Exactly!! I went through this exact same thing when I was trying to buy a 4Runner in the Bay Area. They were very, very motivated to sell, but as soon as you brought up the VIN, they stopped responding. Wouldn't even let you come see the truck since they knew you'd be running the VIN when you got there anyway. Not sure who the idiots are that are buying these trucks blindly and keeping these thieves in business.

Now that I'm selling my 4th Gen, I see that these San Jose guys are still at it. Hopefully people know enough to distinguish my original mileage from their fabricated 70k.

Yep, I bought a 97 about 3 years ago with 175k, didn't think to run a Carfax. I've had a fair share of repairs and now that I'm over 212k I thought I would see if the timing belt showed on the carfax.
Looked like it went from 180 down to 100 a few years back. I'm actually proud of her. For having 300k she runs great. I found a 4th gen to upgrade, but I'm not going to get shit out of mine.

Great another thing to get me worried about buying a used car haha. I thought it was strange that some of the old 4runners I was looking at had rather low miles for the years. I figured that wouldn't be as common. Time to be a lot more detailed.

My garage is linked with CARFAX so every car we service with a license plate gets a record of repair including date and mileage...One only needs to request a CARFAX record to look for inconsistencies.

Wow, this has to be one of the oldest active threads on this site! I bought my 3rd gen with odometer showing ~250k. Needless to say, I didn't think there was much to be gained by running a CarFax. At this point, it either works or it doesn't. I did get records from previous owners indicating when timing belts were changed, etc., so I can plan when to stage bigger maintenance items. But with 250k miles, I am pretty sure nobody has rolled back the odometer...

I am shopping around for a 3rd gen limited. I saw an ad today on KBB for a 2000 limited with 84k miles, 9k. Beautiful truck. Ran a report and it showed in 2015 the mileage was documented at 115k. Contacted the seller and he asked where I got that information because it only has 85k now. He is the second owner. I'm glad I came across this thread!

I saw a 2003 4Runner with customer made metal bumpers with 73,000 miles. It was listed for $10,000. I contacted the owner and set up a test drive. It looked nice drove decent. It had new headlights. I noticed the hood around the headlights was a little off.

I asked the guy if it was okay if I took a picture of the VIN. He said he had a report on it. When he went inside I snapped a quick picture of the VIN on the door. He came back out with a 5 page AutoCheck print out. Everything on the list looked good. All Green checks. I told him I'd be in contact.

I got home and ran a CarFax it turns out the vehicle had been in 2 different accidents, with the second one being a total loss. The last odometer reading in 2016 showed 254,000 miles on it.
He still has it listed.
