I asked the guy if it was okay if I took a picture of the VIN. He said he had a report on it. When he went inside I snapped a quick picture of the VIN on the door. He came back out with a 5 page AutoCheck print out. Everything on the list looked good. All Green checks. I told him I'd be in contact.

I got home and ran a CarFax it turns out the vehicle had been in 2 different accidents, with the second one being a total loss. The last odometer reading in 2016 showed 254,000 miles on it.
He still has it listed.
Have you flagged the ad or reported him to whichever page he is posting to?

Maybe someone knows this, but is it considered illegal if you were to swap in a lower mileage cluster even if it’s disclosed? I’m on the hunt for an SR5 cluster and I doubt I will find one with the exact mileage I have. Is it illegal if the new cluster is rolled back to reflect the actual mileage on the vehicle? That’s an honest change, but it still is a rollback.

Roll Backed

I purchased my 2000 SR5 4Runner in Aug 2018 from a dealer in Orlando, FL. The odometer read 128,346. A sticker on the timing belt cover showed the belt had been replaced at approx 164,000 miles in 2011. I pointed this out to the dealer and then left to mull it over. Came back and the sticker had been "power washed" off by detailer. I realized that the odometer had been rolled back but still purchased the Runner cause it was in great shape. Only thing done so far is new plugs, oil change, new Bilstein 5100s and cargo cover.

I thought I'd found a great deal on a 2007 SR5 in Phoenix, showed 125k on the odometer. Drove great, paint looked nice, no evidence of any accidents. The driver's seat foam was pretty well worn out, but that was the only evidence of high miles. I wasn't going to do the Carfax, but decided to just in case and am glad I did. It had at least 243k miles on it. It was one-owner until it hit an auction and no accidents, but still, not going to buy a car from someone proven to be dishonest to that level.

Still looking...

San Diego odometer rollback

I was going to make a post about a craigslist ad I just found in San Diego. I went and checked the truck out. Everything was clean and I almost bought it. Checked Carfax on a whim and turns out it had 30k more miles than the odometer read and was not 1 owner as reported, but recently bought in an auction. Really scummy considering this dude made up stories for every question I asked.

Link for those interested: 2000 Toyota 4Runner Limited 4x4 - cars & trucks - by owner - vehicle automotive sale

This is my first time using this forum. Is it appropriate to make a individual post about this or is this super common?

Could email carfax if interested haha

Odometer and Speedometer no Longer Work

Any thoughts on selling a vehicle without a working ODO or Spedo. The title our 1994 4Runner listed as mileage exempt but we are concerned it will be a hard sell unless we fix it.

I picked up my first 4runner almost a year from now. It's a 96 limited. I bought it from my friends father who wanted almost 4k for it, and it had around 173k mi on it. They rarely drove it, as they had a 5th gen and 2 Tacoma's as well.

I just had this feeling I should check out the carfax report from it, and sure enough it was red flagged as possible odometer rollback tampering.

As I followed the history of its service, it showed the first 2 owners took very good care of the truck. The 3rd owner didnt own the truck very long, and traded it into a used car dealership. This is where the tampering started. As I calculated the mileage from the services records, the used dealer rolled back the odometer almost 150k mi less than what it actually had.

As I showed my friend and his father what I found out, he was pretty pissed. Only because he was the customer who purchased the 4runner next from that used car dealership. I still needed a hunting rig, so he dropped the price down to 2k, and i drove it home.

The truck drives surprisingly good for something with over 300k on the chassis. But I did do all the major maintenance it needed and lifted it 3". Once i started wrenching on this rig, I've been hooked and cant see myself letting it go. Plans are to give it to one of my kids. But if plans change, I will definitely let the new buyer know the history of truck.

I hear Carfax is only as accurate as the information reported. I don't find much honesty in the automotive industry.

Pretty much all cars in San Jose have odometer issues. When I lived there you could go on craigslist and get someone to show up and lower your odometer for 40 bucks before selling your car to an unsuspecting person. I find that the best way to tell true mileage is to look at the drivers seat. They are very expensive to replace (especially with airbags) and if it is thrashed or has been reupholstered, someone has sat in it many many times.

I just got scammed buying a 2003 V8 4WD Limited. Saw it on a San Diego craigslist ad with the odometer reading 65k and priced at 14.5k. Called the guy up and he asked if I had any questions of the car. I asked about the usual maintenance and if the timing belt was done etc.. Went and checked it out and it ran great and drove fine. He provided me with receipts and carfax showing timing belt was done (which all turned out to be fake). Talked him down a couple grand and bought it. After having a weird feeling in my stomach I decided to buy the carfax and that's when I discovered it had 250k+ miles at the last service (2 months before I bought it). After the guy completely avoided my calls/texts I called the police dept. and was informed that the car wasn't stolen so there's really not much they could do. I'm also assuming that the name on the title wasn't the guy who sold it to me and he gave me all false information. In the end it ****ing sucks that you really can NEVER trust what anyone says when buying a used car from a private party. In the end, it does come down to me for not catching the red flags and taking his word for it but ill take it as a lesson learned. Please be very careful and do your research when buying so you don't end up like me!

Actually, there is a greater possibility if you buy from a shady lot - unless the "private seller" is really a curbstoner (a dealer who makes himself - or herself - look like a private seller). Curbstoning is illegal in all states but, like odometer rollbacks, doesn't bother the bad guys.

Odometer fraud is real and dangerous - the odometer fraud investigators at NHTSA are gun toters.

That said, CARFAX, like another poster said, is only as good as the info it gets and a typo can cause a world of trouble.

A few years ago, I bought a brand new Acura. The first service at 7000 miles showed up right, the second at 13000 miles showed up as 3000 miles. The third showed up as 19000 miles.

When I went to trade it, the dealer ran the CARFAX and it showed as "possible odometer rollback"

Reading through this is all too familiar. I am looking for a 4th gen T4R...and went and looked at a 2006 Sport V8 4WD today. It looked great...drove great. But something just didn't feel right. Came home and did some research...very enlightening.

Car is advertised as having 93k on it. Couldn't find anything to confirm or refute that number, but what I found was a HUGE discrepancy in the CarFax that I was given at the dealer vs. what was reported on AutoCheck. The Carfax had a strange report of an accident which only read "it hit a moped". What in the world?

Autocheck shows the vehicle has frame damage. Makes me wonder if the 93k is accurate as well.

Still on the hunt...man, I wish that 2006 had been right...

Ran into this issue a lot when looking for 4th gen. Even right now there are 10+ 2006-2008 runners with 60-100k near me. Most obvious is they are mostly for sale by dealers all for less than they sell the same vehicle with twice the mileage.

I didn't realize how awful people are and walked away from many with rusted frame or 2nd timing belt sticker under cover yet "only has 70k" blah blah blah. A few also had wheel bearings or timing chain on last legs but still somehow only had 70-90k miles with no service history....umm yeah maybe if it's a flood vehicle with a "clear" title. Problem is there are usually 1-2 real full record low mileage steals but have to look at them all and be ready to move immediately to sort out all the scammers.

I am running into the same issue myself. Think I found a nice 04 with 87k original owner and looks good but haven't seen it in person yet.
I have been looking at pilots, highlanders and 4runners. When I find one at a decent price and looks clean something ends up being wrong.
Ive run into a lot of title jumpers and mileage rollbacks. Key is checking the carfax and auto check out to make sure the mileage lines up with what they are saying.

If anyone needs hookup on cheap carfax I can share. I would Ive spent at least 50-60 on them so far in my search and every one of them has reveled things that would make me turn away without even looking at them.
