Nissan discontinuing the Xterra and therefore abandoning customers. Toyota has shown they will not do this to their 4Runner customers.

Why?

I like to camp and travel. When my Honda Pilot finally died I knew I needed an off road vehicle. So many places I wanted to go, but could not get to.

Mods and making the vehicle unique is also fun. I love this forum and seeing what everybody else does.

And there is just something about a five speed automatic transmission that can not be beat.

What inpired you to buy a Runner?-img_2041-jpgto.

I've mentioned it before I was sold on Toyota by my dad's 2005 Tacoma. Years of carting us four kids from rink to rink, lacrosse/soccer field to field. The countless trips of moving us in and out of dorms and/or houses at college. My dad's 1 hour commutes to and fro work. All the other random trips and mulch haulings ha. Etc. Etc. Now with over 200K, that Taco just runs and runs. The only significant issue was the frame (thanks for the consistency Toyota ha). Fortunately, the Taco was recalled. I knew that at the end of the day, I wanted reliability and utility like my dad's Taco. The 4Runner was the only and best choice.

I like this question!

There are three main reasons I'm driving a 4Runner (2008 4th gen SR5.

1. Between my folks, my sister and me, my family has had roughly 13 Toyota or Lexus vehicles over many, many years! Needless to say, I'm partial.

2. The 4Runner really suits my needs well - lots of hunting, modest off-roading, the occasional Nebraska snow storm, etc.

3. My previous vehicle, a Nissan Pathfinder, was at the end of its useful life and I was ready... see reason number 1!

They look cool, they're reliable and they don't need $7,500 worth of wheels, tires and lift like a Wrangler does

My brother bought six brand new 4Runners before me. He never kept them longer than 4 years. He missed out on their best feature...reliability.

I bought my first one new in 2000. Kept it for 16 years (225,000 miles).

Bought my second new one in 2005. I have had it 13 years and 166,000 miles.

Love these rigs!

1. Reliability

2. Off road capability (even stock it is impressive)

3. Design (I find 4runners to be very good looking cars)

Me?

I don't have one yet, but I think I want one generally because I started researching quality SUV's that are known for reliability and something more than "AWD".

Moved from SoCal to the midwest and knew I needed a 4wd eventually. My wife was looking at cars and test drove a 4Runner and didn't care for it, she went with a Highlander. When we went back to pick up her Highlander, I sat in the 4Runner and just felt like it was the one for me. Went back and picked mine up 2 weeks later.

I wanted a capable and reliable 4WD vehicle for many reasons, and went to a garage in SoCal to look at some options. I think I went there to look at an old Pathfinder.

The garage only deals in true 4WD vehicles, and while I didn't like the Pathfinder (I'm 6'4" so my head touched the ceiling) I looked at what I considered to be the holy grail, a 3rd gen T4R.

Well, two hours later I was driving it back home! Also tested a 4th gen that day but it was moded in a weird way and wasn't for me.

As funny as this sounds, my friend with his Jeep (pic below) is the reason I'm buying a 4Runner (I'm working through final details on an 04 V8 Limited, should be picking up in a week or two).

I went with him to SEMA this year and got my feet wet in looking at offroad rigs. After SEMA, flew back to Denver (where he's from) for a few days and took his Wrangler off road up in the mountains near Idaho Springs, CO.

Was addicted from the moment we left pavement and spent all my time sitting at the airport that Sunday night deciding on what type of offroad rig I wanted. Knew it wouldn't be a Jeep because I didn't feel the creature comforts of the interior were good enough (coming from Volvos that have insanely comfortable interiors and good stereos).

Budget landed me on a 4th Gen and a local friend of mine here in Cincinnati who has owned many 4th Gens chatted and I made a list of what I wanted. A month and a half later stumbled across the one I'm picking up and couldn't be more excited!

Visited Seattle this time last year and fell in love with it. Went to Rainier National Park while we were there but had to have a vehicle w 4WD per the park's rules. Wife got a new Wrangler JL a few months ago but it just wasn't doing it for me. I've always been a Toyota guy anyway, so after doing my research for best offroad vehicle, trading in my Tundra for the 4Runner was an easy choice. Picked up this beautiful 2019 Voodoo Blue TRD Pro last week and now Seattle can't come soon enough!

I was looking at SUV's and nothing could match the features I wanted except Toyota.
