My 1st suv that I owned was a 4th gen and unfortunately had to part ways before I joined the service. Now that I’m all settled in, I had the chance to snag another 4th gen. Reliability is the main reason I’ve gotten myself into another 4runner. I had close to 300,000 miles on my previous one and only had to change the driver side caliper and alternator once besides standard maintenance. Loved it and will probably continue to purchase 4runner’s in the future.

I'm a Ford guy. After driving a 68 F100 since 1986, and buying vehicles for the Wife and kids for the last 30 years, I decided to buy me something.
I wanted something to drive offroad. I wanted a Jeep Wrangler, but that wouldn't be practical for us. So it was an SUV.
Older Jeep Cherokees can be modified for what I wanted, but they are difficult to find. New offerings seemed to be plagued with horror stories.
I also looked at the offerings from Ford (I noticed they all start with the letter "E". Edge, Escape, Explorer, Excursion, Expedition)
As I perused listings I noticed an absence of 4runners. Lots of them around, not many for sale.
So the end of Nov I bought a '17 SR5 from a Toyota dealer, already lifted, aftermarket wheels & larger tires.
Drive it to work. Explore desert trails or washes (oops). Just did a 1,100 mile road trip this last weekend and helped my son move.
So far very happy with my decision. That may change when I break something, lol.

I kept getting blown out tires and cracked rims on my way to work in NY. Absolutely terrible roads that never get fixed and too much traffic to adequately avoid them. So my son jokingly said that if I had a Jeep i wouldn't get flat tires, and that i should get a 4Runner like he told me years ago.

So i did some research and bought one. lol

I also am planing a cross country trip and this will be much better than my little Mazda.

Took a 2 week vacation in Hawaii, and saw so many gnarly lifted 4runners. I rode in one and fell in love.
I've been searching for one ever since I got back.

It replaced my wife's Gen 1 Sequoia. It fit a dog crate and two large "Tupperware" behind the rear seat, did not have TSS and was a toyota body on frame.

Family and Expedition Overland

A lot of my family have been in the Toyota business so I kind of fell in line. Although Expedition Overland really got me into the customization/offroad aspect!

My wife and I now have a vacation place in the NC mountains and I wanted something with 4wd in case of snow or the opportunities to go off road. I actually had a very capable off road vehicle, an 88 Jeep Wrangler YJ in great condition. The only problem was it wasn't suitable to drive the 5-6 hours from home to mtns and back. Just too rough and unrefined for these old bones. And it got to be a pain towing it every time. So I wanted something very capable off road and refined on the road and with Toyota reliability. My first choice was an FJ Cruiser but I was limited to buying something for, or at least close to what I got when I sold the Jeep. Now I'm totally happy with my 05 SR5.

I traded a Tacoma in 2016 for a Jeep 4 door Wrangler. I’m 66 but enjoy adding accessories and taking care of my rides. I ended up last week getting rid of the Jeep just to many issues and when the tranny went that was the last straw.
I looked at the Tacoma again but I wanted a 4.0 engine. I couldn’t find one and then I started looking at the 4Runners. They had everything I had in the Jeep and more. I found a 2018 TRD with 7300 miles on it. Picked the Jeep up with the new tranny and drove it a couple of hours to the East side of the state made the deal on the 4runner and headed home. The three hour drive home convinced me I made the right decision as the 4Runner was a much better ride as a whole.
Got some Weather Techs put in. A little more beef of a tire going on today. Have my rock sliders on order and some neoprene seat covers. I’m happy again!

I had an FJ Cruiser for a number of years and I sold it for a more fuel efficient car at the time. Worst mistake I ever made. I have never been truly happy with anything I have had since and I have always wanted a 4Runner.

We're the same age and way of thinking as it comes to our vehicles it seems. I also had Jeeps but mine were Grand Cherokees, the last one a 2005. At around 130,000 to 140,000 miles the transmissions just start acting up. My '93 had the 4.0 straight 6 cyl. and it was indestructible. Fantastic engine. The '05 had the 4.7 V8 and it was another good engine. Even with good maintenance the trannys just don't last. No excuse for that. I love my 4Runner and it will most likely out last me!

When I was in college I remember seeing the 3rd gen and falling in love with the styling of it. It was just perfect IMO.

A few years later after graduation I bought a new one and have kept it ever since.

What inpired you to buy a Runner?

Before purchasing my 4Runner, my commuter car was a GMC Terrain. Being a Mom of 4 dogs (now 5) I totally envied the rear functioning window of a 4Runner, I also loved how spacious the rear cargo was. To add, the flat folding bench seats—just take my money!

I always cruise with two dogs minimum in the Terrain, but I’m not a fan of the fact that I couldn’t fit ONE kennel without sacrificing room. With the 4Runner, I tested I can fit a total of 4 Ruff Land Kennels. Impressive!

Below are my 3 pups. I took them to the beach shortly after buying our 4Runner. In case you’re wondering, one is at home and the 5th puppy is too wild to sit still with her pack. Lol.

Our other car is a MB Sprinter decked in kennels.

I had wanted one ever since the 4th gen came out while i was in middle school. It represents all things adventurous to me and I admired the combo of style and reliability. When it finally came time to buy my first car after college, I went straight for one!
