The 4 runner is capable of off roading regardless of a lift. You just have to learn what it's capabilities are. Mine is still stock, I took it and pretty much maxed out on its capabilities this weekend.
For starters, make sure you go with a group, and have a spotter to get you through tight spots. I ended up needing one and my passenger tried but just couldn't get me through a few spots. I ended up getting assistance from a jeep group. Haha, good times!
I think I'll feel a little more comfortable once I get the lift installed. Another thing to think of is armor. Link armore, shock armor, lower control arm armor, and a diff skid will protect you until a lift is installed.
If you have the $, get a complete underbelly skid kit. Different vendors sell them. But it's a catch 22, with a lift you usually clear all the obstacles so skids aren't really needed (peace of mind really), without a lift- they are well worth it.
And they're different types and brands of lifts. Just deciding which one is the hard part.
