black or stainless steel grill guard on WHITE 4Runner?
Thanks for the great links on grill guards.
What are people's opinions on going with a black or a stainless steel grill guard on a natural white 2004 4Runner?
I am torn between the two and would like to hear people's preferences.
I cannot afford Jaos, but probably can afford Manik.
Look forward to hearing your opinions.
Thanks.

My opinion is that if you have silver roof racks and running boards then go with the stainless, but if you have black boards/racks go with the black.

My grill/light mount
Here's my grill guard. Its kinda a cross between a tube bumper and a grill gaurd. The company that made it has decided not to market it, but its definetly well made so I am not worrying about it. I've only "tested" it once so far...just needed a little paint. The integrated winch is VERY useful until I get a rear locker.

Too bad. that sort of front and rear guard is EXACTLY what I'm looking for. I'd be interested in seeing in more detail the winch and its mount. also the fairlead's mount on the front, too. from the pics, it looks as if it's not attached to the guard...is it attached directly to the winch?

safari gard
Hi Kev,
Safari Gard made this grill gard. It's only integrated with the winch in terms of how the fit of the gard is custom for clearance of the fairlead. Here are some pics of how it has been mounted to the front of the frame.

I had the WAAG grille guard-BIG WASTE OF MONEY. Next year ARB will come out with there integrated bumper, will probably cost as much as the Manik or WAAG. I would buy an ARB if I was you(when it comes out) thats what I'm going to do after buying the WAAG($500 down the drain).

So here's the story...This truck is one of 2-4? in existence that were modded by a Safari Gard in Marietta California for Toyota Motor Co. The trucks were used to promote the new 4runner on a Discover TV show and at the Chicago car show.
Here is a link:
http://www.rockcrawler.com/features/...ta_4runner.asp
Eighteen months ago I saw these truck on TV and I dreamed of modding a 4runner exactly the same way. So I tracked down Safari Gard an asked them about it. They said they weren't sure if the would even do any more "one offs" but if the did...it could be between 6-8K. I started to loose interest.
Then one day, I was surfin for deals on 4runnners on AutoTrader.com and I found one of "the" trucks for sale at CU Auto Sales in Salt Lake City. So I decided to go snowboarding in Snowbird and ...pick up my dream truck! It had only 2600 miles on it and was mint. Since then I've added and changed things here and there (NE lift, K&N Aircharger, Diff breather, GPS, Rack and accessories, etc.). Still have plans for more of course: needs a bumpn' system, skids, rear locker, dual batts, remote start, iPod mount and on, and $$$.
If anyone wants this stuff, I would contact Safari Gard in Murietta CA. and convince them ($$$) to hook you up. They never seemed to interested for some reason? All I can say is, give it a shot. I really like this truck. It does everything well and the way it all came about for me, was truly remarkable.
Let me know if you have any questions...
Also, if anyone knows where the other trucks are, please let me know... seperation at birth can be tramatic. Sibling reunions are always good closure ;)

Was this truck the actual vehicle used to 'climb Mt. Everest'?
Or, hopefully, it was just used for the poseur shots back in the states?
Looks nice, I am a big fan of the grey cladding on silver, black, green and white Runners.

From what I heard, up to 4 trucks were used at different locals all over the globe (iceland, moab, kalihari, costa rica). Mine was used in Costa Rica. By used, I mean photo ops and hauling gear. It had a little mud on the skids, nothing major.
