Especially since you're considering the 5th gen, a very similar platform overall. At the rate you're going your 4runner will easily last another 5 years, more likely 10 with little more repairs.

So true. Well I just spent the afternoon at a dealership. Looked at a white 2018 SR5 Premium with 36k miles for $30,995. The salesman sits me down before he'd take me to see the vehicle and explains that all the prices on their website are $2000 more and it says so in the fine print!! WTF!!! I found the Runner on AutoTrader and there was no such disclaimer. I was so pissed. Car dealerships have enough trouble with reputation and trust, what a terrible way to start off the relationship!! Then he tells me that even though the ad and the banner across the windshield says "Certified", you have to pay the extra $1500 to actually get it certified!! It just means they did the prequalifications and it's ready to be certified.
Then he tells me he can get me in a new one for the same price, which is my favorite magic trick of all time, so I let him waste the time. We looked at a 2020 Limited in Dark Blue. He told me it would drive much better so we took it for a spin as well. 50k vs 33k, big difference.

But overall, I have to say, I was pretty disappointed in their acceleration. Both seemed about equal experiences engine-wise.

I saw this argument in another thread so I'm not trying to start it up again, but it felt like not enough power and a heavier vehicle. Even mashing down on the pedal got a very underwhelming reaction. I was pretty surprised because I was expecting a 10 year newer model to have more pep than my 2008 V6.

Hmmm, after 8 years in mine I was really looking forward to an upgrade, but you make a great point.

Gotta love the dealership tricks. Problem is most people will walk in and not care about anything except for whether or not they'll be able to afford the monthly payment. I would've got up and walked out at the first mention of a "price descrepancy".

I'm sure you could get into a brand new truck for the "same price". Problem is they don't mean the same price. They mean that the monthly payment is the same, but the used truck is on a 5 year loan, while the new trucks are now easily financed for 7 or 8 years.

My sister bought a 2014 limited last year and I have to say I'm not too impressed. The seats are pretty uncomfortable, interior not very ergonomic and it doesn't drive as well as you'd hope with the price tag they carry. The 4th gen is a better platform in my opinion with limited experience.

Gearing is really the only factor that might've changed power delivery. The engine is basically identical still since around 2005, the transmission is still "only a 6 speed" which is fine by me, but not what a lot of new car buyers are looking for. It just isn't the step up it should be after almost 15 more years of development since the 2006 revamp (not that it was much different from the 03-05s)
