New Fuel Economy Rules: 54mpg by 2025

Have you guys read about the new policy that will require manufacturers to average 54.5 mpg across their lineup by 2025? The current standards require 29.7mpg with something like 37mpg by 2016. I don't think it takes a TV analyst to see that manufacturers will be physically unable to offer consumers vehicles like the FJ and T4R much longer with current gasoline technology. Now, with a nice 3.0L turbo diesel we could have our cake and eat it too. I can't see Americans turning their noses up at diesel too much longer, especially considering it is literally the best bang for your buck engine technology going and its only a matter of time before it goes mainstream in the US. The downside is that for all those people desperately hoping for a V8 to return to the 4Runner, I wouldn't hold your breath.

I'll be glad for the day I can pop a Dilithium Crystal (or whatever) in my car/truck and not be beholden to stock marketeers and their investments in my use of liquids dug out of the ground.

Maybe for my grand kids.

In the meantime, yeah, I'd love a nice torquey turbo diesel in my next 4Runner. An electric one with a 350 mile range with equivalent torque would be even better. My workplace parking garage is covered in solar panels and we've got electric car charging stations.

If I never had to pay at a pump again I'd be happy. Even if the vehicle cost a few grand more up front I'd be happy. A car payment is a fixed cost. No one knows what oil will cost 2, 5, 10 or 15 years from now no matter how much we drill. Global economy, futures, marketeers, etc.

Due to exemptions for things like E85 fuel big gas guzzlers will probably always be around. Also it's an average MPG so electric and hybrid vehicles will bring up the average quite a bit. Ford and Chevy have been selling E85 trucks for years to get the exemption without even telling anyone they were able to use E85 fuel!
