Noise Problems: Recommended Guidelines

I've noticed a lot of threads regarding noise complaints and issues lately, most of them tend to be very vauge & unhelpful. This thread is not made to chastise or belittle those and/or any future members who want help for their issues, but rather provide them a rough guideline to better help convey their issue in a manner so that we can start helping them from the first post rather than having to wait for them to provide clarification.

Recommended Guidelines:

~Please provide the Model Year (i.e. '06), Engine (i.e. 4.0L or 2GR-FE), and Trim (i.e. SR%, Sport, or Limited of your vehicle.
~Please provide what sequence of events create the noise. (i.e. When I take off from a stop... ect)
~Please provide what & where the noise is coming from (i.e. "Clunking from under the driver's side area"
~Please provide any additional information that seems relevant (i.e. "when its cold out, only when I mash on the pedal, only when I hop on one foot and turn left, ect)

Ideally if you follow these guidelines we can provide you with a direction and/or possible ideas right from your original post instead of having to wait until you respond, thus making it easier on the forum and helping you out faster!

Post Note- If you'd like to learn more please visit our Sticky: The Toolbox and How to Use It for more detailed information regarding diagnosing noises and other issues! This has been a public service announcement from the crazy people, you may now return to your regularly scheduled truck porn.

Wink Oh great its this guy again!!!!

Thanks for putting this up BlackWorks! this will certainly help someone like me
OK, lets see if I got the formula correct shall we?

1)Info: 2003 Sport Edition V8 (118K) Service done/WP&Belt, diffs, crank, trans, spark plugs/:

(Prologue) I am getting a vibrating humming noise/ sensation when I first start her up it fluctuates in pitch to the engines usual (up and down??? sounds) at idle

2) a: Usually worst on colder mornings and goes away after the engine warms up.
b: noise is worse when not moving and nearly unnoticeable when moving
c: turning the wheel while stopped can reduce the vibration and noise by half for just a few moments until the engine idles up
d: (cold)when put in reverse and slow backup the vibration and noise doubles
e: (cold)when put in first; vibration and noise double
f: when engine is (warm) or has been run that day noise is all but gone and vibration is very very subtle.

3) It's coming from the engine bay for sure and because it happens at standing idle I can quantify its not the drive train.

4) I recently hauled a trailer and only after the fact did I notice this...I like to let my V8 warm up (2-5min) before I start driving around and until now she was always in a 50C+ garage so maybe I just failed to notice... but it seems very temperature related...anything below 40 seems to make it very noticeable THANKS!

Question acceleration noise help, if I may

I have a 97 4runner 2 wheel drive with a 3.4 engine. it is an automatic SR5. I have owned several of these 4rnr's and have had really great success with them and currently off road a 97 SR5 4x4 5 speed and have 249K pain free miles with it.
that said, I recently purchased this from the original owner and it has 244k miles on it.
OK, ok, on with the issue... at hard acceleration, the intake roars as the rpm goes up. at idle and cruising, it is fine/ but put it under a load and the noise gets louder and louder until you let off.

observations:
recent tune up
new cat. converter (no change in noise)
cleaned the MAS
Idle is fine
power is weaker

concerned that the timing belt change that the owner had performed a few days before selling, may not be right, but it starts, idles, fine, and no engine light.
ugh?

It is best to also pay attention to even the smallest details, because then it can turn into a big problem.

I've noticed the same thing with the temp in my 98 4runner. Let me know what you find out!

Transmission whine

I own a 2000 4Runner 4-speed automatic; I've owned it since 2004. It has performed very well, and other than replacing the radiator about a year ago, it's only ever required routine maintenance.

However, Saturday evening (05Mar16) I began hearing a new noise. It was a "whine", and over the following days I've determined that it consistently happens when I accelerate from a stop, such as at an intersection. The whine starts out as a low tone, and builds as I accelerate. Then it stops completely once the vehicle pops into second gear.

A tech at a local transmission shop believes it is caused by a bearing in the transmission. However, both the transmission itself and the vehicle overall are otherwise performing well mechanically; the fluid looks good; and no error codes are returned. The tech suggested that I check online before he begins getting into the transmission; in the meantime, he will check for TSBs on this issue. I've found discussion forums online which also suggest planetary gears as the culprit.

I would greatly appreciate knowing whatever information you folks may have on this "whine" issue, so that I can minimize my costs and my downtime. Thank you.

I have a 4unner 1997 awd, lifted 2 inches but i think their is no diff drop, the noise only happens when i am on drive (or when tranny is engaged) when i am idling, ill press the brake pedal and intermittent it would shake a bit, havent had time to check tranny oïl/diff oïl, or if it is from the drive shaft. any tips on how to find the noise or is their a common problem on this vehicule?

2003 V8 4x4

I have a 2003 SR5 V8 4Runner with about 116K miles that started making a whining noise from the engine compartment. It is most noticeable at idle and seems to get better with increased RPMs.

I changed the oil last night and still seem to have the problem.

Noise Problem

So I have a 1993, 3VZ-E V6 4x4 4runner, SR5.

Seemingly, the catalytic converter is making a lawnmower sound, higher rpm=more sound(rev). Only happened after going offroading in a desert area, it's now consistent. Going to look into more asap, however, obviously, all tips will be appreciated. Thanks

Thanks for these tips. As soon I have the rights to post a question re: brakes, I'm going to follow your instructions.
