Question 1999 SR5 4X4 rear diff info needed

My rear diff is SCREAMING and needs to be replaced.

Called the Toyota dealer..gave my VIN and code on the inside of the door. They tell me my 4runner is 4.10 non locking part# 4110 35890 $1536.24

Question:
Can I count on the information given from dealer?
Does the diff have a label on the outside telling what type it is?
Can I find a place to purchase a rear diff cheaper

I need to be sure because I am in Stuttgart, Germany

Do you have an auto or manual transmission?
Is what you have already a non-locking differential?

List price is up there so I'm sure that part is accurate. When I did my e locker upgrade I sold my old third member on Craigslist for $100. I'm not sure how available used parts are to you but I'd research that before I drop $1500.

Have you removed your third member to inspect it? I'd do at least that. You can verify the gears (ratio) and check for wear. You might be able to get away with replacing bearings and if you're lucky the gears aren't shot from running it. Worst case you need a master install kit, gears and an install.

Yeah, 4.10 4cyl diffs go for $100 all the time. Later 6cyl diffs are sometimes as high as $200. I bet if you find one Stateside worth buying, you could find a forum member nearby to drop it off at a shipping location and end up well under $1500.

But for the money you'll spend shipping that chunk of metal, why not get your existing diff serviced? I agree with 4x4mike, drop the third and take it to a couple driveline shops and see what they say.
