Going to see a 2003- question about price and head gasket.

Hey All- I'm going to check out a 2003 4Runner in a couple days, and I want to make sure I inspect everything thoroughly. Also want to get opinions on price.

It's a one owner with all service records since new. 112k miles. New brakes, no rust. Seems to be in pretty exceptional condition judging by the pictures. He's currently asking $10k. If it's in good condition, I'll aim to pay no more than $8500...does that sound reasonable for age and condition?

When I see it in person, I'll be cycling through the 3 modes on the T-Case to ensure everything works correctly. I know head gaskets are an area of concern- is there a simple, reliable way to check that out?

Otherwise, I'll be making sure it tracks straight, that the transmission shifts smoothly, doesn't have brake issues, etc.

Any additional advice is greatly appreciated!

I'll assume it's a V6.

Pulling plugs, compression test, coolant in the oil are some ways to check.

As for other things to check-
leaks- oil, transmission, coolant and be sure to check the back inside tries for rear axle seals. I know it's more common in Gen 3's, but with the age, doesn't hurt to check.

Check the brakes, belts, hoses and battery, tires.

And someone might correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the 03' still had the 4-speed transmission. Nothing wrong with it, just don't expect it to be the 5-speed, again assuming it's a V6.

In addition to what has been already posted, I would recommend checking the frame for excessive rust damage. Depending on where it's from, this could be an issue.
