I'll assume it's a V6.
Pulling plugs, compression test, coolant in the oil are some ways to check.
As for other things to check-
leaks- oil, transmission, coolant and be sure to check the back inside tries for rear axle seals. I know it's more common in Gen 3's, but with the age, doesn't hurt to check.
Check the brakes, belts, hoses and battery, tires.
And someone might correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the 03' still had the 4-speed transmission. Nothing wrong with it, just don't expect it to be the 5-speed, again assuming it's a V6.
