I am not even close to replacing my 4runner's struts, but I can tell you that on my '03 Avalon the original struts were all blown at 25,000 miles. When I got around to replacing them at 30k I could easily compress them by hand - they offered no resistance at all.
Now this was all city/urban driving on the rough streets of Albuquerque, but since then I haven't put much faith in oem toyota struts lasting too long.
As for the wobble, I had that too in the same car. It was warped brake rotors. It was also not noticeable until highway speeds.
Hope that helps. I don't have any opinions about which brand of strut you should look to for replacements. There's lots of info about that here on the site though. Bilstien seems to be a perennial favorite.
